The present invention relates to a method of applying absorbent gelling material (AGM) granules by indirect printing onto an carrier layer for use in an absorbent article, particularly diaper for babies or adults, training pants, pull-up diapers (diaper pants), sanitary napkins, panty liners or the like. These articles typically comprise the carrier layer with the AGM particles together with further layers, making up the complete article.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for indirectly applying absorbent gelling material granules onto a non-woven carrier layer, said method comprises the following steps: introducing absorbent gelling material granules via two inlet portions into a centrifugal roll, said centrifugal roll having an axis and comprising a central portion of cylindrical form and said two inlet portions that are frustoconical and positioned on both sides of said central portion in an axial direction, wherein said two inlet portions are connected with an absorbent gelling material supply system having a supply tube divided in two branch tubes which are connected with said two inlet portions of said centrifugal roll at their axial ends; allowing said absorbent gelling material granules to leave said central portion and said centrifugal roll and pressing said absorbent gelling material granules against the inside of a screen printing roll which is partially covered on the outside with a belt by centrifugally created pressure, said screen printing roll having openings in the circumferential wall forming a pattern of suitable shapes and sizes; allowing said absorbent gelling material granules to leave said screen printing roll through said openings at each rotation of said centrifugal roll; depositing said absorbent gelling material granules on said non-woven carrier layer at a meeting position of said printing roll and said non-woven carrier layer without contact of said printing roll and said non-woven carrier layer. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein a glue is applied onto said non-woven carrier layer upstream said meeting position before said absorbent gelling material granules are deposited onto said non-woven carrier layer from said printing roll in said meeting position. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein a glue is applied onto said absorbent gelling material granules deposited onto said non-woven carrier layer downstream said meeting position. 4. The method of claim 2 wherein said glue is a micro-fiber glue. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein a cover layer is applied onto said absorbent gelling material granules downstream said meeting position. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said cover layer comprises a glue. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said non-woven carrier layer is transported to and from said meeting position by means of a conveying belt or a rotating support roll.
