A method for recharging a battery pack includes attaching a portable charger to a user, which portable charger includes or is attached to a self-contained power supply and wherein a first charging port of the portable charger is disposed, e.g., on a belt worn by the user, hanging the battery pack on the belt while the battery pack is physically engaged and in electrical communication with a power tool, and initiating a transfer of power from the charger to the battery pack when the first charging port is at least proximal to a second charging port that is in electrical communication with at least one battery cell of the battery pack. A portable charging system capable of performing this method, as well as an adapter for use in performing this method, are also disclosed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A portable system for recharging a battery pack while the battery pack is attached and electrically connected to a hand-held power tool, comprising: a charger configured to supply power for recharging battery cells in the battery pack, wherein the charger comprises or is attached to a self-contained power supply, and means for attaching the charger to a user, wherein the attaching means comprises a belt configured to be worn around the user's waist and a belt hook receiver supporting at least one charging terminal of the charger configured to communicate charging current via a wired connection. 2. The portable system according to claim 1 , wherein the self-contained power supply comprises a plurality of rechargeable battery cells. 3. The portable system according to claim 2 , wherein the rechargeable battery cells of the charger have a higher charge storage capacity than the battery cells of the battery pack and output a lower nominal current than the battery cells of the battery pack. 4. The portable system according to claim 3 , wherein the belt hook receiver is configured to engage a belt hook attached to the power tool or a belt hook attached to the battery pack. 5. The portable system according to claim 4 , wherein the belt hook receiver further comprises a proximity sensor configured to output a charging initiation signal when the charging terminal is proximal to the belt hook, wherein the proximity sensor includes one or more of a mechanical contact, a pressure sensor or switch, a radio frequency identification (RFID) device, a magnet or magnetic field sensor, such as a reed switch or a Hall sensor, and/or an electrical resistance or capacitive sensor. 6. The portable system according to claim 5 , further comprising: a second battery pack connected to a belt hook that includes a charging terminal receiver. 7. A method for recharging a battery pack comprising: attaching a portable charger to a user, wherein the portable charger comprises or is attached to a self-contained power supply and wherein a first charging port of the portable charger is disposed on a belt worn by the user, hanging the battery pack on the belt while the battery pack is physically engaged and in electrical communication with a power tool, and initiating a transfer of power from the charger to the battery pack when the first charging port is at least proximal to a second charging port that is in electrical communication with at least one battery cell of the battery pack. 8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the first and second charging ports comprise complementary terminals configured to conduct a charging current from the charger to the at least one battery cell of the battery pack. 9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising detecting a proximity of the first charging port to the second charging port and initiating the transfer of power upon detection of the proximity. 10. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising terminating the transfer of power upon detecting that the first charging port is no longer proximal to the second charging port. 11. The method according to claim 9 , wherein proximity is detected based upon a magnetic field, a pressure, a radio signal, an electrical resistance or capacitance, or a mechanical movement. 12. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the second charging port is disposed on or in a belt hook attached to the battery pack or to the power tool. 13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the belt hook is attached to an adapter that is physically engaged with the battery pack or the power tool. 14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the adapter controls the charging operation. 15. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the belt hook is directly attached to the battery pack. 16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the charger controls the charging operation. 17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein a controller of the battery pack controls the charging operation. 18. The method according to claim 7 , wherein an adapter including a charging controller is connected to the power tool and is connected to the at least one charging terminal of the charger, the method including stopping a charging operation controlled by the charging controller using power supplied by the charger in response to a signal transmitted from a controller of the battery pack. 19. A method for recharging a battery pack comprising: transferring power from a charger to the battery pack while the battery pack is attached to a power tool upon detecting the proximity a first charging port of the charger to a second charging port that is in electrical communication with at least one battery cell of the battery pack. 20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the first and second charging ports are disposed on or adjacent a belt worn by a user. 21. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the charger is attached to the user while the user performs power tool operations and comprises or is attached to a self-contained DC power supply. 22. A system comprising: a hand-held power tool comprising an electric motor, a tool chuck operably connected to, and driven by, the electric motor, and a battery pack mount that includes first and second power terminals; a battery pack detachably attached to the battery pack mount, the battery pack comprising (i) a plurality of first rechargeable battery cells and (ii) first and second battery terminals electrically connected to the plurality of first rechargeable battery cells and also to the first and second power terminals, respectively; a belt configured to be worn around a user's waist; a charger comprising a plurality of second rechargeable battery cells configured to supply charging current for recharging the first rechargeable battery cells in the battery pack, the charger being mounted on the belt; and first and second charging terminals coupled to the belt and electrically connected to the plurality of second rechargeable battery cells, the first and second charging terminals being configured to communicate the charging current to the first rechargeable battery cells of the battery pack via a wired connection while the power tool is hung on the belt and the battery pack remains attached to the battery mount of the power tool. 23. The system according to claim 22 , including a belt hook receiver mounted on the belt and supporting the first and second charging terminals, the power tool being hangable on the belt by being connected to the belt hook receiver. 24. The system according to claim 23 , including an adapter connected to the power tool, the adapter including a charging controller and third and fourth power terminals electrically connectable to the first and second charging terminals, the charging controller being configured to stop a charging operation in response to a signal transmitted from a controller of the battery pack. 25. The system according to claim 22 , wherein the hand-held power tool comprises a tool selected from a group consisting of: an electric drill, an electric impact and screw driver, an electric impact wrench, and an electric grinder. 26.
