Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for installing an elastomeric cover sleeve on an electrical connection including a connector and a cable having a cable axis includes: providing an installation tool including a slide portion; premounting the installation tool on the cable such that the slide portion extends along the cable axis and covers a portion of the cable; thereafter, sliding the cover sleeve onto the cable and onto the slide portion of the premounted installation tool to a parked position wherein the slide portion is interposed between the cover sleeve and the cable; installing the connector onto the cable; and thereafter, sliding the cover sleeve along the cable axis and the slide portion onto the connector.

That which is claimed: 1. An installation tool for installing an elastomeric cover sleeve on an electrical connection including a connector and a cable having a cable axis, the installation tool comprising: a base ring assembly including a base ring and a retention mechanism; and a slide portion extending axially from the base ring; wherein the installation tool is configured to be premounted on the cable such that: the slide portion extends along the cable axis and covers a portion of the cable; the base ring extends about the cable and axially secures the slide portion to the cable and, when the installation tool is so mounted: the cover sleeve can be slid onto the cable and onto the slide portion to a parked position wherein the slide portion is interposed between the cover sleeve and the cable; and the cover sleeve can thereafter be slid along the cable axis and the slide portion onto the connector; wherein the retention mechanism includes an integral clamping mechanism selectively operable to close the base ring about the cable and thereby affix the base ring to the cable; and wherein the base assembly further includes a retention screw mounted on the base ring and configured to be driven onto or into the cable to thereby engage the cable and affix the base ring to the cable. 2. The installation tool of claim 1 wherein the slide portion includes a plurality of axially extending, elongate strands. 3. The installation tool of claim 2 wherein the strands are formed of polytetrafluoroethylene. 4. The installation tool of claim 2 wherein the strands are metal wires. 5. The installation tool of claim 1 wherein the slide portion is flexible to permit the slide portion to be selectively folded away from the cable axis and back toward the base ring when the installation tool is mounted on the cable. 6. The installation tool of claim 1 wherein the integral clamping mechanism includes a clamp bolt and/or a clamp nut selectively operable to close the base ring about the cable and thereby affix the base ring to the cable. 7. The installation tool of claim 6 wherein: the base ring includes a ring body having opposed ends and a side opening defined between the opposed ends; and the clamp bolt and/or the clamp nut are operable to pull the opposed ends together to close the side opening. 8. The installation tool of claim 1 wherein the base assembly includes a plurality of retention screws mounted on and circumferentially distributed about the base ring, each of the retention screws being configured to be driven onto or into the cable to thereby engage the cable and affix the base ring to the cable. 9. The installation tool of claim 1 wherein the integral clamping mechanism is configured to be selectively actuated to tighten and clamp the base ring onto the cable to thereby affix the base ring to the cable. 10. An installation tool for installing an elastomeric cover sleeve on an electrical connection including a connector and a cable having a cable axis, the installation tool comprising: a base ring assembly including a base ring and a retention mechanism; and a slide portion including a plurality of elongate strands extending axially from the base ring; wherein: the base ring is configured to extend around the cable and to axially secure the elongate strands to the cable; and the elongate strands are configured to slide the cover sleeve over when the installation tool is mounted on the cable; wherein the retention mechanism includes an integral clamping mechanism selectively operable to close the base ring about the cable and thereby affix the base ring to the cable; and wherein the base assembly further includes a retention screw mounted on the base ring and configured to be driven onto or into the cable to thereby engage the cable and affix the base ring to the cable. 11. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the strands are formed of a polymeric material. 12. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the strands are formed of polytetrafluoroethylene. 13. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the strands are metal wires. 14. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the elongate strands are flexible to permit the elongate strands to be selectively folded away from the cable axis and back toward the base ring when the installation tool is mounted on the cable. 15. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the integral clamping mechanism includes a clamp bolt and/or a clamp nut selectively operable to close the base ring about the cable and thereby affix the base ring to the cable. 16. The installation tool of claim 15 wherein: the base ring includes a ring body having opposed ends and a side opening defined between the opposed ends; and the clamp bolt and/or the clamp nut are operable to pull the opposed ends together to close the side opening. 17. The installation tool of claim 10 wherein the base assembly includes a plurality of retention screws mounted on and circumferentially distributed about the base ring, each of the retention screws being configured to be driven onto or into the cable to thereby engage the cable and affix the base ring to the cable.
