Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle measurement station utilizing at least one displacement sensor systems disposed on each opposite side of a sensor region of a vehicle inspection lane to acquire measurement data, associated with a vehicle passing through the sensor region. Each displacement sensor system is configured to acquire measurement data along at least three discrete and vertically spaced measurement axis in response to a trigger signal indicating the presence of a vehicle moving through the inspection lane. A processing system receives the acquired data for evaluation, identification of outlier data points, and for determining a measurement associated with a characteristic of the moving vehicle.

The invention claimed is: 1. A vehicle measurement system, comprising: a pair of sensor units disposed in proximity to a vehicle inspection lane through which a moving vehicle passes, with one sensor unit of said pair on each opposite lateral side of said vehicle inspection lane; wherein each sensor unit includes at least one displacement sensor system configured to acquire at least three displacement measurements associated with a rolling wheel assembly on an associated side of a vehicle moving through said vehicle inspection lane between said sensor units, each of said displacement measurements acquired along an associated measurement axis, each of said associated measurement axes vertically separated along a common vertical axis; and wherein each of said sensor units is operatively coupled to convey said displacement measurements to a processing system configured with software instructions to utilize said displacement measurements to determine at least one measure of a vehicle characteristic. 2. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said processing system is further configured with software instructions to determine a center point on the axis of rotation for a vehicle wheel assembly from said acquired displacement measurements. 3. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said acquired displacement measurements include at least three pairs of displacement measurements associated with a common circumferential feature of the vehicle wheel assembly, each pair of displacement measurements aligned on an associated horizontal chord, and each horizontal chord intersecting the vehicle wheel assembly at a different vertical height. 4. The vehicle measurement system of claim 3 wherein said common circumferential feature is one of a tire peripheral edge, a tire sidewall curvature peak, a tire rim guard, or a wheel rim lip. 5. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said at least one displacement sensor system includes a two-dimensional imaging pixel array and an emitter assembly configured to project at least three beams of illuminating light, each of said beams of illuminating light parallel to at least one of said measurement axes; and wherein said at least one two-dimensional imaging pixel array is configured to acquire images of said illuminating light reflected from illuminated surfaces. 6. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said measurement axes are in a parallel arrangement at known vertical separations along said common vertical axis. 7. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said vehicle characteristic is a vehicle velocity. 8. The vehicle measurement system of claim 1 wherein said processing system is further configured with software instructions to evaluate said displacement measurements to identify any displacement measurements which are outside of a selected measurement tolerance. 9. The vehicle measurement system of claim 8 wherein said processing system is further configured with software instructions to exclude said identified displacement measurements outside of said selected measurement tolerance from said determination of said at least one measure of said vehicle characteristic. 10. A vehicle measurement system, comprising: a pair of sensor units disposed in proximity to a vehicle inspection lane through which a moving vehicle passes, with one sensor unit of said pair on each opposite lateral side of said vehicle inspection lane; wherein each sensor unit is configured with a plurality of laterally spaced displacement sensor systems; wherein each displacement sensor system is configured to acquire a plurality of distance measurements associated with a rolling wheel assembly on an associated side of a vehicle moving through said vehicle inspection lane between said sensor units, said plurality of distance measurements acquired along a plurality of measurement axis associated with each displacement sensor system, said plurality of associated measurement axes vertically separated along a common vertical axis uniquely associated with said displacement sensor system; and wherein each of said sensor units is operatively coupled to convey said distance measurements acquired by said plurality of displacement sensor systems to a processing system configured with software instructions to utilize said conveyed distance measurements to determine at least one measure of a vehicle characteristic. 11. The vehicle measurement system of claim 10 further including a trigger system operatively coupled to each of said sensor units, said trigger system configured to generate a trigger signal in response to an object moving within said inspection lane at a first vertical elevation. 12. The vehicle measurement system of claim 11 wherein said trigger system includes an optical trigger responsive to interruption of an optical beam to generate said trigger signal. 13. The vehicle measurement system of claim 12 wherein said optical beam is aligned with a first boundary edge of a sensing region between said pair of sensor units, through which said vehicle enters said sensing region. 14. The vehicle measurement system of claim 13 wherein said trigger system includes a second optical trigger responsive to interruption of a second optical beam to generate a second trigger signal, said second optical trigger aligned with a second boundary edge of said sensing region through which said vehicle exits said sensing region. 15. The vehicle measurement system of claim 11 wherein said trigger system is further configured to generate a second trigger signal in response to an object moving within said inspection lane at a second vertical elevation, said second vertical elevation different from said first vertical elevation. 16. The vehicle measurement system of claim 15 wherein said processing system is configured to receive said first and second trigger signals, and to evaluate said first and second trigger signals to identify the presence of a moving vehicle within said inspection lane. 17. The vehicle measurement system of claim 15 wherein said first vertical elevation is selected to be continuously interrupted by a vehicle moving within said inspection lane, and wherein said second vertical elevation is selected to be intermittently interrupted only by the wheel assemblies of said vehicle. 18. The vehicle measurement system of claim 10 wherein said vehicle characteristic is a vehicle velocity. 19. The vehicle measurement system of claim 10 wherein each displacement sensor system is configured to acquire said plurality of distance measurement along at least three associated measurement axes.
