Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method and apparatus track the location of a mobile device within a process plant and display present information about the location of the mobile device in the process plant relative to equipment of the process plant. A location awareness component generates information pertaining to the location of the mobile control room device. A first routine interprets information generated by the location awareness component according to information stored in a database to determine a relationship between the location of the device and a layout of the process plant. A second routine generates a graphic for depiction on the display according to the determined relationship between the location of the device and the layout of the plant.

We claim: 1. A mobile control device for use in process plant, the device comprising: a processor; a memory device communicatively coupled to the processor; a display communicatively coupled to the processor; a location awareness component operable to generate information pertaining to the location of the mobile control room device; a database stored on the memory device and storing layout information of the process plant; a first routine stored on the memory device and operable to interpret information generated by the location awareness component according to information stored in the database to determine a relationship between the location of the mobile control device and the layout of the process plant and to detect, based on the determined relationship, one or more proximate devices proximate to the mobile control device; a second routine stored on the memory device and operable to identify one or more context devices, wherein the one or more context devices are one or more of the following: (i) devices specified by a work item stored at a database as target devices or as being within a target location, or (ii) devices that fall within a user's span of control; and a third routine stored on the memory device and operable to generate for depiction on the display a user interface element depicting information corresponding to a particular device when the particular device is included in both the one or more proximate devices and the one or more context devices. 2. A mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the database storing layout information of the process plant includes layout information for each process control device in the process plant, the layout information for each process control device including: a device tag; a device visualization; a device location; and device connection information. 3. A mobile control device according to claim 2 , wherein the device visualization comprises a plurality of device visualizations, each device visualization corresponding to a mobile control device type, or a mobile control device display type. 4. A mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the location awareness component comprises an RFID reader. 5. A mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the location awareness component comprises an RFID tag and a communication channel between the processor and a server, the server providing location data to the processor. 6. A mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the location awareness component comprises a plurality of sensors operable to determine, relative to an anchor point, the movement and position of the mobile control device. 7. A mobile control device according to claim 6 , wherein the plurality of sensors comprise a plurality of accelerometers and a plurality of gyroscopes. 8. A mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the third routine is operable to generate a real-time graphic of the location of the mobile control device within the process plant as the mobile control device moves within the process plant. 9. A mobile control device according to claim 8 , wherein the real-time graphic presents the location of the mobile control device from an overhead perspective. 10. A mobile control device according to claim 8 , wherein the real-time graphic presents the location of the mobile control device in three dimensions from an eye-level perspective. 11. The mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein: the user interface element is a navigation element; the context is the target device or the target location; and the information corresponding to the context is a direction or a route to the target device or the target location. 12. The mobile control device according to claim 11 , further including a routine that identifies the target device or the target location based on user input identifying the target device or the target location. 13. The mobile control device according to claim 11 , further including a routine that identifies the target device or the target location based on information received from a server or from a context identification device. 14. The mobile control device according to claim 13 , wherein the information received from the server or from the context identification device relates to a work item. 15. The mobile control device according to claim 13 , wherein the server or the context identification device transmitted the information to indicate that the target device or the target location needs to be monitored or serviced. 16. The mobile control device according to claim 1 , wherein the information corresponding to the particular device is process data or an alarm. 17. The mobile control device according to claim 16 , wherein: the process data or the alarm corresponds to the target device or the target location. 18. The mobile control device according to claim 16 , wherein: the process data or the alarm correspond to responsibilities of the user as defined by the user's span of control. 19. The mobile control device according to claim 16 , wherein the graphic is integrated with real-time captured images to provide an augmented reality display. 20. A method of facilitating mobile control of a process plant, the method comprising: implementing a mobile user interface device; providing in the mobile user interface device a location awareness component operable to generate information pertaining to the location of the mobile control room device; providing a database storing layout information of the process plant; implementing on the mobile user interface device a first routine operable to interpret information generated by the location awareness component according to information stored in the database to determine a relationship between the location of the mobile control device and the layout of the process plant and to detect, based on the determined relationship, one or more proximate devices proximate to the mobile control device; implementing on the mobile user interface device a second routine operable to identify one or more context devices, wherein the one or more context devices are one or more of the following: (i) devices specified by a work item stored at a database as target devices or as being within a target location, or (ii) devices that fall within a user's span of control; and implementing on the mobile user interface device a third routine operable to generate for depiction on the display a user interface element depicting information corresponding to a particular device when the particular device is included in both the one or more proximate devices and the one or more context devices. 21. A method according to claim 20 , wherein providing a database storing layout information of the process plant comprises providing a database storing layout information for each process control device in the process plant, the layout information for each process control device including: a device tag; a device visualization; a device location; and device connection information. 22.
