Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Powder dispensing and sensing apparatus and methods are provided. The powder dispensing and sensing apparatus includes a tray support structure to receive a cartridge tray holding cartridges, a powder dispenser assembly including powder dispenser modules to dispense powder into respective cartridges of a batch of cartridges in the cartridge tray, a powder transport system to deliver powder to the powder dispenser modules, a sensor module including sensor cells to sense respective fill states, such as the weights, of each of the cartridges in the batch of cartridges, and a control system to control the powder dispenser modules in response to the respective sensed fill states of each of the cartridges of the batch of cartridges.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for sensing weights of cartridges in an array of cartridges, comprising: providing an array of weight sensor assemblies that matches positions of at least a subset of the cartridges in the array of cartridges, wherein each of the weight sensor assemblies includes at least one weight sensor cell and wherein each weight sensor cell is orientated parallel to a vertical plane, each weight sensor cell including a weight sensor probe configured to interface to a cartridge to be sensed, weight sensing components, electronic circuitry below the weight sensing components and an electrical connector at a bottom of the weight sensor assembly, wherein the weight sensor probe is positioned above the weight sensing components, the electronic circuitry and the electrical connector, and wherein the weight sensor assemblies are arranged in a housing to form a two-dimensional array of weight sensor probes with equal spacing between adjacent weight sensor probes in two dimensions; positioning at least a subset of the cartridges in the array of cartridges in contact with respective weight sensor probes in the array of weight sensor assemblies; and sensing weights of at least a subset of the cartridges in the array of cartridges. 2. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein sensing weights comprises simultaneously sensing weights of at least a subset of the cartridges in the array of cartridges as the cartridges are being filled. 3. A method as defined in claim 2 , further comprising providing sensor signals in response to sensing weights of the cartridges, the sensor signals controlling filling of respective cartridges in the array of cartridges. 4. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising directing cooling air over the weight sensor assemblies. 5. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the weight sensor assemblies are configured to control filling of the cartridges during a fill time of 10 seconds +/− one second. 6. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the weight sensor assemblies are configured to control filling of the cartridges with an accuracy of 5 to 10 micrograms. 7. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the weight sensor assemblies are configured to control filling of the cartridges with 10 milligrams +/− 3 percent of a powder. 8. A method for sensing weights of cartridges, comprising: providing an array of weight sensor assemblies, wherein each of the weight sensor assemblies includes at least one weight sensor cell that is orientated parallel to a vertical plane, each weight sensor cell including a weight sensor probe configured to interface to a cartridge to be sensed, weight sensing components, electronic circuitry below the weight sensing components and an electrical connector at a bottom of the weight sensor assembly, wherein the weight sensor probe is positioned above the weight sensing components, the electronic circuitry and the electrical connector, and wherein the weight sensor assemblies are arranged in a housing to form a two-dimensional array of weight sensor probes with equal spacing between adjacent weight sensor probes in two dimensions; and sensing weights of the cartridges with the weight sensor assemblies of the array of weight sensor assemblies. 9. A method as defined in claim 8 , further comprising directing cooling air over the weight sensor assemblies. 10. A method as defined in claim 8 , wherein sensing weights comprises simultaneously sensing weights of the cartridges as the cartridges are being filled. 11. A method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the weights of the cartridges are sensed so as to control filling of the cartridges during a fill time of 10 seconds +/− one second. 12. A method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the weights of the cartridges are sensed so as to control filling of the cartridges with an accuracy of 5 to 10 micrograms. 13. A method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the weights of the cartridges are sensed so as to control filling of the cartridges with 10 milligrams +/− 3 percent of a powder. 14. A method as defined in claim 8 , further comprising providing sensor signals in response to sensing weights of the cartridges, the sensor signals controlling filling of respective cartridges.
