An audio capture system for a sports camera includes at least one “enhanced” microphone and at least one “reference” microphone. The enhanced microphone includes a drainage enhancement feature to enable water to drain from the microphone more quickly than the reference microphone. A microphone selection controller selects between the microphones based on a microphone selection algorithm to enable high quality in conditions where the sports camera transitions in and out of water during activities such as surfing, water skiing, swimming, or other wet environments.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for determining if a first microphone is wet in a camera system having the first microphone and a second microphone, wherein the first microphone is positioned in a recess coupled to a drainage channel to drain water from the recess away from the first microphone, and wherein the second microphone is positioned away from the drainage channel, the method comprising: capturing a first audio signal by the first microphone and capturing a second audio signal by the second microphone; detecting, by a wind detector, if a wind level in an operating environment of the camera system is below a predefined wind threshold while capturing the first audio signal and the second audio signal; determining, by a processor, a first average signal level of the first audio signal and a second average signal level of the second audio signal over a predefined time interval; determining, by the processor, a ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level; responsive to the ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level being below a predefined ratio threshold and the wind level being below the predefined wind threshold, determining, by the processor, that the first microphone is wet; and outputting an indication that the first microphone is wet. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: applying a smoothing filter to the ratio, the smoothing filter to smooth the ratio over a sequence of time intervals. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting if the wind level exceeds the predefined wind threshold comprises: determining a correlation metric between the first audio signal and the second audio signal representing a similarity between the first audio signal and the second audio signal; and determining if the correlation metric exceed a predefined correlation threshold. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining the correlation metric comprises: correlating the first audio signal and the second audio signal over a predefined spectral range of approximately 600 Hz to approximately 1200 Hz. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining if the correlation metric exceeds the predefined correlation threshold comprises: setting the predefined correlation threshold to a first predefined value responsive to the correlation metric exceeding the predefined correlation threshold in a prior time interval; and setting the predefined correlation threshold to a second predefined value responsive to the correlation metric not exceeding the predefined correlation threshold in the prior time interval, wherein the first predefined value is higher than the second predefined value. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the camera system further comprises an upper drain that operates to let air enter the recess and push the water downward through the drainage channel and out a lower drain. 7. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions for determining if a first microphone is wet in an camera system having the first microphone and a second microphone, the first microphone is positioned in a recess coupled to a drainage channel to drain water from the recess away from the first microphone, and wherein the second microphone is positioned away from the drainage channel, the instructions when executed by a processor causing the processor to perform steps including: capturing a first audio signal by the first microphone and capturing a second audio signal by the second microphone; detecting if a wind level in an operating environment of the camera system is below a predefined wind threshold while capturing the first audio signal and the second audio signal; determining a first average signal level of the first audio signal and a second average signal level of the second audio signal over a predefined time interval; determining a ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level; responsive to the ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level being below a predefined ratio threshold and the wind level being below the predefined wind threshold, determining that the first microphone is wet a wet; outputting an indication that the first microphone is wet. 8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , further comprising: applying a smoothing filter to the ratio, the smoothing filter to smooth the ratio over a sequence of time intervals. 9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein detecting if the wind level exceeds the predefined wind threshold comprises: determining a correlation metric between the first audio signal and the second audio signal representing a similarity between the first audio signal and the second audio signal; and determining if the correlation metric exceed a predefined correlation threshold. 10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein determining the correlation metric comprises: correlating the first audio signal and the second audio signal over a predefined spectral range of approximately 600 Hz to approximately 1200 Hz. 11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein determining if the correlation metric exceeds the predefined correlation threshold comprises: setting the predefined correlation threshold to a first predefined value responsive to the correlation metric exceeding the predefined correlation threshold in a prior time interval; and setting the predefined correlation threshold to a second predefined value responsive to the correlation metric not exceeding the predefined correlation threshold in the prior time interval, wherein the first predefined value is higher than the second predefined value. 12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the camera system further comprises an upper drain that operates to let air enter the recess and push the water downward through the drainage channel and out a lower drain. 13. An audio capture system comprising: a housing having a recess coupled to a drainage channel to drain water away from the recess; a first microphone positioned in the recess, a second microphone positioned away from the drainage channel; a processor; and a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions for determining if the first microphone is wet, the instructions when executed by the processor causing the processor to perform steps including: capturing a first audio signal by the first microphone and capturing a second audio signal by the second microphone; detecting if a wind level in an operating environment of the camera system is below a predefined wind threshold while capturing the first audio signal and the second audio signal; determining a first average signal level of the first audio signal and a second average signal level of the second audio signal over a predefined time interval; determining a ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level; responsive to the ratio of the first average signal level to the second average signal level being below a predefined ratio threshold and the wind level being below the predefined wind threshold, determining that the first microphone is wet; outputting an indication that the first microphone is wet. 14.
