Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An electronic message may be reconfigured to effect an enhanced notification using an input interface to receive at least one electronic message created by or on behalf of a message source for delivery to an intended recipient. A matching engine determines whether the electronic message corresponds to a predetermined definition of an enhanced notification. An enhancement engine reconfigures the electronic message to the enhanced notification if stored information related to the intended recipient indicates that the intended recipient is subscribed to receive the enhanced notification. Reconfiguring the electronic message may include reconfiguring the message to provide special handling, routing or presentation.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving an electronic message for an intended recipient; identifying a type of the electronic message; determining, based on the type of the electronic message, whether to provide a notification of the electronic message to the intended recipient; upon determining that the notification is to be provided based on the type of the electronic message, identifying notification settings dictating one or more delivery formats for the notification based on the type of the electronic message; and; providing, using one or more processors, the notification of the electronic message in a first delivery format based on the notification settings. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising providing the notification of the electronic message in a second delivery format based on the notification settings, wherein: the first delivery format comprises one of an icon, a pop-up notification, a flashing indicator, a tactile alarm, or an audible alert; and the second delivery format comprises another of an icon, a pop-up notification, a flashing indicator, a tactile alarm, or an audible alert. 3. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an icon; and the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification. 4. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an audible alert; and the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification. 5. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the pop-up notification comprises a pop-up window. 6. The method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising providing the notification of the electronic message in a third delivery format based on the notification settings. 7. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an icon; the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification; and the third delivery format comprises an audible alert. 8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the notification settings comprise one or more user selected preferences specifying the first and second delivery formats. 9. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising receiving the notification at a mobile device associated with the intended recipient. 10. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the notification is received from a source associated with a client application on the mobile device. 11. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client application comprises one of a calendar application, a weather application, and a task application. 12. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the mobile device comprises a mobile phone. 13. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the mobile device comprises a tablet computer. 14. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein providing the notification of the electronic message in the first delivery format comprises an operating system of the mobile device enabling the presentation of the notification on the mobile device. 15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing a set of instructions thereon that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computer device to perform steps comprising: receiving an electronic message for an intended recipient; identifying a type of the electronic message; determining, based on the type of the electronic message, whether to provide a notification of the electronic message to the intended recipient; upon determining that a notification is to be provided based on the type of the electronic message, identifying notification settings dictating one or more delivery formats for the notification based on the type of the electronic notification; and providing the notification of the electronic message in a first delivery format based on the notification settings. 16. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computer device to perform the step of providing the notification of the electronic message in a second delivery format based on the notifications settings, wherein: the first delivery format comprises one of an icon, a pop-up notification, a flashing indicator, a tactile alarm, or an audible alert; and the second delivery format comprises another of an icon, a pop-up notification, a flashing indicator, a tactile alarm, or an audible alert. 17. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an icon; and the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification. 18. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an audible alert; and the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification. 19. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computer device to perform the step of providing the notification of the electronic message in a third delivery format based on the notification settings. 20. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 19 , wherein: the first delivery format comprises an icon; the second delivery format comprises a pop-up notification; and the third delivery format comprises an audible alert. 21. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16 , wherein the notification settings comprise one or more user selected preferences that specify the first and second delivery formats. 22. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 21 , wherein computer device is a mobile device and the notification is received at the mobile device from a source associated with a client application on the mobile device. 23. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 22 , wherein the client application comprises one of a calendar application, a weather application, and a task application. 24. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 23 , wherein the mobile device comprises a mobile phone. 25. A method comprising: receiving an electronic message; identifying a type of the electronic message; determining, based on the type of the electronic message, whether to provide a notification of the electronic message to the intended recipient; identifying notification settings indicating one or more delivery mechanisms for the notification of the electronic message based on the type of the electronic message; providing, using one or more processors, the notification of the electronic message to an intended recipient via a first delivery mechanism based on the notification settings; and concurrently providing, using the one or more processors, the notification of the electronic message to the intended recipient via a second delivery mechanism based on the notification settings. 26. The method as recited in claim 25 , wherein: the first delivery mechanism comprises one of a text message, an instant message, a pop-up notification, or an email; and the second delivery mechanism comprises another of a text message, an instant message, a pop-up notification, or an email. 27. The method as recited in claim 26 , wherein: the first delivery mechanism comprises a text message; and the second delivery mechanism comprises a pop-up notification.
