Embodiments of the present disclosure relate devices, systems, methods, and for displaying information about the direction and magnitude of position, movement, and/or resistive force experienced for an object. The present disclosure also provides a shear display device that can generate skin shear with one or more tactors. The movement of the tactors can represent to a user various information about an object.

We claim: 1. A shear display device for displaying tactile information and cues to a user, the device comprising: a body having an outer surface and an opening therein; at least one tactor received by the body in the opening; a flexible material on the outer surface of the body, the flexible material covering the at least one tactor and opening; and at least one actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor, wherein the at least one tactor includes a plurality of discrete tactors, the plurality of discrete tactors covered by the flexible material, the flexible material configured to provide a single percept from a combined motion of the plurality of discrete tactors. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tactor is connected to the flexible material. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein movement of the at least one tactor is transmitted through the flexible material. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible material is a polymer membrane. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the tactor is received in the body, an outboard surface of the tactor approximately flush with an outer surface of the body. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible material is a protective cover to the tactor and the opening. 7. A shear display device for displaying tactile information and cues to a user, the device comprising: a body, the body including a first end and a second end; at least one tactor received by the body; at least one actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor; and a restraining device attached to the body, the restraining device configured to hold a hand of a user proximate to the device. 8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the restraining device includes a strap, the strap connected to the first end and the second end of the body. 9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the strap is adjustable. 10. The device of claim 7 , wherein the restraining device is configured to limit movement of the hand of a user longitudinally, rotationally, laterally or a combination thereof. 11. The device of claim 7 , wherein the restraining device includes a strap and further comprising a band, the band connected to the strap and attached to the second end of the body. 12. The device of claim 7 , wherein the restraining device holds the hand of the user proximate to the device with sufficient force to retain a position of the device absent a grasping force by the user. 13. The device of claim 7 , further comprising at least one sensor, the at least one sensor configured to determine a presence, location, and/or applied pressure of the hand and fingers of the user. 14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to adjust control of the at least one actuator according to the presence, location, and/or applied pressure of the hand and fingers of the user. 15. A method for displaying force and movement information related to one or more objects, the method comprising: providing a body, the body including: at least one tactor; a flexible material on an outer surface of the body, the flexible material covering the at least one tactor and contacting an outboard surface of the at least one tactor; and at least one actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor; and moving the at least one tactor in response to information about movement of or forces experienced by an object, the at least one tactor transmitting the movement of the at least one tactor through the flexible material to a portion of skin of a user, wherein the at least one tactor includes multiple discrete tactors covered by the flexible material, the flexible material configured to provide a single percept from a combined motion of the multiple discrete tactors. 16. A method for displaying force and movement information related to one or more objects, the method comprising: providing a body, the body including: at least one tactor; a flexible material on an outer surface of the body, the flexible material covering the at least one tactor and contacting an outboard surface of the at least one tactor; and at least one actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor; moving the at least one tactor in response to information about movement of or forces experienced by an object, the at least one tactor transmitting the movement of the at least one tactor through the flexible material to a portion of skin of a user; and connecting a hand of a user to the body using a restraining device, the restraining device configured to hold the hand proximate to the device and limit the movement of the hand of a user relative to the device. 17. A method for displaying force and movement information related to one or more objects, the method comprising: providing a body, the body including: at least one tactor; a flexible material on an outer surface of the body, the flexible material covering the at least one tactor and contacting an outboard surface of the at least one tactor; and at least one actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor; moving the at least one tactor in response to information about movement of or forces experienced by an object, the at least one tactor transmitting the movement of the at least one tactor through the flexible material to a portion of skin of a user; and providing at least one sensor disposed within the body, the at least one sensor configured to determine the presence, location, and/or applied pressure of the hand and fingers of the user. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the at least one sensor configured to adjust control of the tactor according to the presence, location, and/or applied pressure of the hand and fingers of the user.
