Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus includes a body portion that defines a reservoir and a set of substantially flexible capillaries. The set of substantially flexible capillaries are fixedly coupled to the body portion and in fluid communication with the reservoir. A connector is configured to be coupled to the body portion to be in fluid communication with the reservoir and the set of substantially flexible capillaries. The connector is further configured to be coupled to a vacuum source. The apparatus is arranged such that at least a part of the body portion is electrically conductive. Methods for separating and detecting an analyte from a biological sample with the apparatus are also provided. For example, methods for separating and detecting one or more proteins from a cellular lysate or a purified protein are also provided.

What is claimed: 1. An apparatus, comprising: a body portion defining a reservoir; a capillary fixedly coupled to the body portion and in fluid communication with the reservoir; a cap coupled to the body portion and including a vacuum connector that is in fluid communication with the reservoir and the capillary, the vacuum connector configured to be coupled directly to a pneumatic vacuum source such that a vacuum can be applied to the reservoir to draw fluid through the capillary and into the reservoir; and a protrusion extending into the reservoir from at least one of the body portion or the cap, the protrusion being electrically conductive and configured to produce a signal when a fluid level in the reservoir contacts the protrusion. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: the body portion and the cap together define the reservoir; the cap is sealingly coupled to the body portion; and the protrusion extends from the cap. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a first portion and a second portion, the second portion including electrically conductive contacts configured to engage the capillary. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a first portion of the body includes electrically conductive plastic. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vacuum connector is electrically coupled to the body portion. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capillary is fixedly coupled to the body portion such that less than half of the capillary is in contact with the body portion. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , the reservoir being a first reservoir, the apparatus further comprising a second reservoir defined by the body portion, the second reservoir being physically distinct from but in fluid communication with the first reservoir. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes at least one registration point configured to align the apparatus with a device into which the body portion is configured to be placed. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capillary is one of a plurality of capillaries coupled to the body portion. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum source including an impeller, the impeller pneumatically connected to the vacuum. 11. An apparatus, comprising: a body portion defining a first reservoir and a second reservoir, the second reservoir being in fluid communication with the first reservoir; a capillary fixedly coupled to the body portion and in fluid communication with the first reservoir; a cap coupled to the body portion, the cap including a vacuum connector that is in fluid communication with the first reservoir, the second reservoir, and the capillary such that a vacuum can be applied to the first reservoir to draw fluid through the capillary and into the first reservoir; and a protrusion extending into the reservoir from at least one of the body portion or the cap, the protrusion being electrically conductive and configured to produce a signal when a fluid level in the reservoir contacts the protrusion. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an absorbent material disposed in the second reservoir, the absorbent material configured to stabilize liquid in the body portion. 13. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an absorbent material disposed in the second reservoir, the absorbent material configured to stabilize liquid in the body portion, the reservoir being a waste reservoir, the waste reservoir and the absorbent material collectively configured such that liquids that enter the apparatus are inhibited from leaving the apparatus. 14. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an absorbent material disposed in the second reservoir, the absorbent material configured to stabilize liquid in the body portion, the capillary, the reservoir, and the absorbent material are collectively configured such that liquids enter the reservoir via the capillary and do not exit the apparatus.
