An apparatus for collecting or culturing cells or cell colonies includes: a common substrate formed from a flexible resilient polymeric material and having a plurality of wells formed therein; and a plurality of rigid cell carriers releasably connected to said common substrate, with said carriers arranged in the form of an array, and with each of the carriers resiliently received in one of the wells. A method of collecting or culturing cells or cell colonies with such an apparatus is carried out by depositing a liquid media carrying cells on the apparatus so that said cells settle on or adhere to said the carriers; and then (c) releasing at least one selected carrier having said cells thereon by gradual application of release energy to each carrier from the cavity in which it is received (e.g., by pushing with a probe).

That which is claimed is: 1. An apparatus for use in releasing a carrier from a microarray with the aid of a microscope, the apparatus comprising: a microscope objective including a lens and an optical axis; a probe adapted for releasing said carrier when contacting said microarray; a retainer formed on or connected to said probe, said retainer configured for engaging said microscope objective in a configuration in which said probe is aligned with said optical axis of said microscope objective; and a drive assembly interconnecting said retainer with said microscope objective, wherein said drive assembly moves said retainer relative to said microscope objective while maintaining alignment of said probe with said optical axis. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said retainer defines an opening adapted to receive said microscope objective. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly comprises a collar member secured to said microscope objective, and a motor interconnecting the collar member and the retainer for driving movement of the retainer relative to the collar member. 4. An apparatus for use in releasing a carrier from a microarray with the aid of a microscope, the apparatus comprising: a microscope objective including a lens and an optical axis; a probe adapted for releasing said carrier when contacting said microarray; a retainer formed on or connected to said probe, said retainer configured for engaging said microscope objective in a configuration in which said probe is aligned with said optical axis of said microscope objective; and a transparent mount connected to said retainer, wherein the mount is configured to overlie the lens when the retainer is engaging said microscope objective, and wherein said probe is connected to said mount. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein said retainer defines an opening adapted to receive said microscope objective. 6. An apparatus for use in releasing a carrier from a microarray with the aid of a microscope, the apparatus comprising: a microscope objective including a lens and an optical axis, said microscope objective adapted to be movable in a direction toward or away from the microarray; a probe adapted for releasing said carrier when contacting said microarray; and a retainer formed on or connected to said probe, said retainer configured for engaging said microscope objective in a configuration in which said probe is aligned with said optical axis of said microscope objective, wherein said retainer moves with said microscope objective for contacting said probe with, or disengaging said probe from, said microarray. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said retainer defines an opening adapted to receive said microscope objective. 8. An apparatus for use in releasing a carrier from a microarray with the aid of a microscope, the apparatus comprising: a microscope objective including a lens and an optical axis; probe adapted for releasing said carrier when contacting said microarray; a retainer formed on or connected to said probe, said retainer defining an opening for receiving said microscope objective in a configuration in which said probe is aligned with said optical axis of said microscope objective; and a transparent mount connected to said retainer, said mount configured for at least partially closing said opening at one end of said retainer and overlying said lens when said retainer receives said microscope objective, and wherein said probe is connected to said mount. 9. An apparatus for use in releasing a carrier from a microarray with the aid of a microscope, the apparatus comprising: a microscope objective including a lens and an optical axis; probe adapted for releasing said carrier when contacting said microarray; and a retainer formed on or connected to said probe, said retainer configured for engaging said microscope objective in a configuration in which said probe is aligned with said optical axis of said microscope objective; and a drive assembly interconnecting said retainer and said microscope objective, wherein said drive assembly moves said retainer transversely relative to said optical axis of said microscope objective for aligning said probe with said optical axis. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the drive assembly comprises a collar member secured to said microscope objective, and a motor interconnecting the collar member and the retainer for driving movement of the retainer relative to the collar member.
