Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus has a main pole layer of magnetic material, a second layer of magnetic material, a first gap layer of non-magnetic material between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, and a second gap layer of non-magnetic material disposed between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material. The second gap layer of non-magnetic material can be directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material. In accordance with one embodiment, this allows the gap to serve as a non-magnetic seed for the second layer of magnetic material. A method of manufacturing such a device is also described.

What is claimed is: 1. A write head having an air-bearing surface, the write head comprising: a main pole layer of magnetic material; a second layer of magnetic material; a write gap between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, the write gap having a beveled section extending to and non-perpendicular to the air-bearing surface (ABS) and a section extending to the beveled section and perpendicular to the ABS, each of the beveled section and the section comprising: a first non-magnetic gap layer comprising a first material; a second non-magnetic gap layer comprising a second material different than the first material; and a non-magnetic seed layer comprising a third material different than the second material directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material. 2. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the second gap layer comprises Al 2 O 3 , Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu. 3. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the seed layer comprises Al 2 O 3 , Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu. 4. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the first gap layer comprises Al 2 O 3 , Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu. 5. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the first gap layer and the seed layer are different materials. 6. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the second gap layer is Al 2 O 3 and the first gap layer and the seed layer comprise the same material comprising Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu. 7. The write head of claim 6 , wherein the second gap layer is Al 2 O 3 and the first gap layer and the seed layer are Ru. 8. The write head of claim 1 , wherein a magnetic moment on a first side of the write gap and a magnetic moment on a second side of the write gap are substantially equivalent. 9. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the second layer of magnetic material comprises 2.4T FeCo. 10. The write head of claim 1 , wherein the main pole layer comprises FeCo. 11. A write head having an air-bearing surface, the write head comprising: a main pole layer of magnetic material; a second layer of magnetic material; a write gap between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, the write gap extending to and non-perpendicular to the air-bearing surface (ABS) at the ABS, the write gap comprising: a first non-magnetic gap layer comprising Ru directly adjacent to the main pole; a second non-magnetic gap layer; and a non-magnetic seed layer directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material, all of the first non-magnetic gap layer, the second non-magnetic gap layer, and the seed layer extending to the ABS. 12. The write head of claim 11 , wherein the second gap layer comprises Al 2 O 3 , Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu, and the seed layer comprises Al 2 O 3 , Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu, where the second gap layer and the seed layer are different materials. 13. The write head of claim 11 , wherein the second gap layer is Al 2 O 3 and the seed layer comprises Ru, NiRu, NiCr, or Cu. 14. The write head of claim 13 , wherein the second gap layer is Al 2 O 3 and the seed layer is Ru. 15. The write head of claim 11 , wherein the first non-magnetic gap layer and the seed layer comprise Ru, and the second non-magnetic gap layer comprises a different material. 16. The write head of claim 11 , wherein the second layer of magnetic material comprises 2.4T FeCo. 17. The write head of claim 11 , wherein the main pole layer comprises FeCo. 18. A write head having an air-bearing surface, the write head comprising: a main pole layer of magnetic material; a second layer of magnetic material; a write gap between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, the write gap extending to and non-perpendicular to the air-bearing surface (ABS) at the ABS, the write gap comprising: a first non-magnetic gap layer comprising Ru directly adjacent to the main pole; and a second non-magnetic gap layer comprising Al 2 O 3 directly adjacent to the first non-magnetic gap layer, each of the first non-magnetic gap layer and the second non-magnetic gap layer extending to the ABS. 19. The write head of claim 18 , wherein the write gap further comprises a non-magnetic seed layer between the second non-magnetic gap layer and the second layer of magnetic material. 20. The write head of claim 19 , wherein the non-magnetic seed layer is directly adjacent to the second non-magnetic gap layer and to the second layer of magnetic material.
