Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

This invention is directed to a medical device having a longitudinal axis, and including a handle and a catheter. The handle can include a body having a proximal end and a distal end, an actuator moveably coupled to the body, and a handle control member coupled to the actuator, wherein the actuator can be configured to move relative to the body to move the handle control member. The catheter can include a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the shaft and the distal end of the body can be configured for releasable coupling. The catheter can also include a steering section located along the shaft and a catheter control member coupled to the steering section, wherein the catheter control member can be configured to move relative to the shaft to move the steering section relative to the longitudinal axis. The medical device can also include a securing member configured to move relative to at least one of the handle and the catheter to releasably couple the handle control member to the catheter control member.

What is claimed is: 1. A medical device comprising: a handle, and a handle control member having a proximal end coupled to the handle and a distal end having an attachment member, wherein the handle control member is configured to move relative to the handle; a catheter, including: a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the shaft and the distal end of the handle are configured for releasable coupling; a steering section located along the shaft; and a catheter control member having a distal end coupled to the steering section and a proximal end having an attachment member configured to couple with the attachment member of the handle control member, wherein the catheter control member is configured to move relative to the shaft to move the steering section relative to a longitudinal axis of the medical device; and a securing member configured to move relative to at least one of the handle and the catheter to permit releasable coupling of the attachment member of the handle control member to the attachment member of the catheter control member. 2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the handle comprises a lock member configured to move in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the medical device. 3. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the securing member comprises one or more indentations for engagement with the lock member to limit longitudinal movement of the securing member. 4. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the lock member extends radially outward of the handle. 5. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a cavity within a portion of the securing member, the cavity opening into a lumen extending at least partially through the securing member. 6. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a connector at a distal portion of the securing member configured for connection to a corresponding indentation in a surface of the catheter upon movement of the securing member along the catheter. 7. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising an indentation and a connector on opposite sides of the securing member and configured to couple to a corresponding respective lock member and an indentation. 8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the handle comprises the corresponding lock member, and the catheter comprises the corresponding indentation. 9. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a retaining member extending over at least a portion of the handle control member. 10. The medical device of claim 9 , wherein the securing member comprises a lumen extending therethrough having a stop between a proximal portion of the lumen and a distal portion of the lumen having a diameter less than a diameter of the retaining member. 11. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises a first lumen and a second lumen, the catheter control member extending through the first lumen. 12. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the catheter comprises a step configured to limit distal movement of the attachment member of the catheter control member. 13. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the attachment member of the handle control member comprises a distal end having a biasing member. 14. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the securing member is configured for rotational movement to releasably couple the attachment member of the handle control member to the attachment member of the catheter control member. 15. A securing device for releasably coupling an attachment member of a handle control member to an attachment member of a catheter control member of a medical device, the securing device comprising: a lock member of a handle member, the lock member configured to move in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the medical device, an indentation of a securing member, wherein a width of the indentation of the securing member corresponds with a dimension of an end of the lock member to limit longitudinal movement of the securing member, and a connector on the securing member and configured to couple an indentation of a catheter, wherein the securing device comprises a lumen extending therethrough having a stop between a proximal portion of the lumen and a distal portion of the lumen having a diameter less than a diameter of a retaining member extending over at least a portion of the handle control member. 16. The securing device of claim 15 , wherein the lock member extends radially outward of the handle member. 17. The securing device of claim 15 , further comprising a cavity within a portion of the securing device, the cavity opening into the lumen extending through the securing device.
