Methods of inducing anesthesia in a subject by administering an effective amount of a compound or a mixture of compounds according to Formula I are provided. Compounds of Formula I are a class of halogenated alcohol derivatives with a vapor pressure of at least 0.1 atmospheres (76 mmHg) at 25° C. Compounds of Formula I can be administered by any route sufficient to achieve a desired anesthetic endpoint.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of inducing anesthesia in a subject, comprising administering to the subject via the respiratory system an effective amount of a compound or a mixture of compounds of Formula I: wherein: n is 0-4, R 1 is H; R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 independently are selected from H, X, CX 3 , CHX 2 , CH 2 X and C 2 X 5 ; and wherein X is a fluorine, the compound having a vapor pressure of at least 0.1 atmospheres (76 mmHg) at 25° C., and the number of hydrogen atoms in Formula I do not exceed the number of carbon atoms, thereby inducing anesthesia in the subject. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of: a) 1-Butanol, 4,4,4-trifluoro-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#14115-49-2); b) 1-Butanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluoro- (CAS#3056-01-7); c) 1-Butanol, 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#782390-93-6); d) 1-Butanol, 3,4,4,4-tetrafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#90999-87-4); e) 1-Pentanol, 1,1,4,4,5,5,5-heptafluoro- (CAS#313503-66-1); and f) 1-Pentanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5-undecafluoro- (CAS#57911-98-5). 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 4,4,4-trifluoro-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#14115-49-2). 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluoro- (CAS#3056-01-7). 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#782390-93-6). 6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 3,4,4,4-tetrafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#90999-87-4). 7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Pentanol, 1,1,4,4,5,5,5-heptafluoro- (CAS#313503-66-1). 8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is 1-Pentanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5-undecafluoro- (CAS#57911-98-5). 9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compound is administered at a dose sufficient to achieve a desired anesthetic endpoint, the desired anesthetic endpoint selected from the group consisting of general anesthesia, sedation, tranquilization, immobility, amnesia, analgesia, unconsciousness and autonomic quiescence. 10. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject is a mammal. 11. A method of inducing anesthesia in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a compound or a mixture of compounds of Formula I: wherein: n is 0-4, R 1 is H; R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 independently are selected from H, X, CX 3 , CHX 2 , CH 2 X and C 2 X 5 ; and wherein X is a fluorine, the compound having a vapor pressure of at least 0.1 atmospheres (76 mmHg) at 25° C., and the number of hydrogen atoms in Formula I do not exceed the number of carbon atoms, thereby inducing anesthesia in the subject. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of: a) 1-Butanol, 4,4,4-trifluoro-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#14115-49-2); b) 1-Butanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluoro- (CAS#3056-01-7); c) 1-Butanol, 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#782390-93-6); d) 1-Butanol, 3,4,4,4-tetrafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#90999-87-4); e) 1-Pentanol, 1,1,4,4,5,5,5-heptafluoro- (CAS#313503-66-1); and f) 1-Pentanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5-undecafluoro- (CAS#57911-98-5). 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the administering comprises administering by any route sufficient to achieve a desired anesthetic effect. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 4,4,4-trifluoro-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#14115-49-2). 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4-nonafluoro- (CAS#3056-01-7). 16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#782390-93-6). 17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Butanol, 3,4,4,4-tetrafluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (CAS#90999-87-4). 18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Pentanol, 1,1,4,4,5,5,5-heptafluoro- (CAS#313503-66-1). 19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is 1-Pentanol, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5-undecafluoro- (CAS#57911-98-5). 20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is administered at a dose sufficient to achieve a desired anesthetic endpoint, the desired anesthetic endpoint selected from the group consisting of general anesthesia, sedation, tranquilization, immobility, amnesia, analgesia, unconsciousness and autonomic quiescence. 21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the subject is a mammal. 22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human. 23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the mammal is a human.
