Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure is directed to a joining element elongate in a longitudinal direction including an inner core extending substantially in the longitudinal direction and an outer sleeve surrounding at least a portion of the inner core. The sleeve includes a lattice that defines at least one angle with respect to the longitudinal direction and the core is swellable against the sleeve along a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction to thereby increase the angle with respect to the longitudinal direction. The disclosure is further directed to a method of joining a first a second material including the joining element of the present disclosure.

What is claimed: 1. A joining element elongate along a longitudinal direction, comprising: an inner core that extends substantially along the longitudinal direction, the inner core comprising a swellable polymer filament and an osmotically active substance incorporated in the polymer filament; and an outer sleeve surrounding at least a portion of the inner core along the longitudinal direction and defining a length in the longitudinal direction between opposed ends of the outer sleeve, the outer sleeve including a lattice that defines at least one angle with respect to the longitudinal direction, wherein upon exposure of fluid to the osmotically active substance, the osmotically active substance causes the polymer filament to swell so that the inner core swells against the sleeve along a direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction to thereby increase the at least one angle and decrease the length of the sleeve with respect to the longitudinal direction. 2. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the swellable polymer filament comprises a thermoplastic elastomer, a crosslinked elastomer, or a combination thereof. 3. The joining element according to claim 2 , wherein the swellable polymer filament comprises silicone, polyurethane, elastin, collagen, or a combination thereof. 4. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the osmotically active substance is incorporated in an isotropic distribution in the polymer filament. 5. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the osmotically active substance comprises a salt. 6. The joining element according to claim 5 , wherein the salt comprises a chloride salt, a carbonate salt, a phosphate salt, or a combination thereof. 7. The joining element according to claim 5 , wherein the salt has a particle size less than 70 micrometers. 8. The joining element according to claim 7 , wherein the salt has a particle size less than 50 micrometers. 9. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the core further comprises tricalcium phosphate. 10. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the core material further comprises an active agent. 11. The joining element according to claim 10 , wherein the active agent is disposed within a vesicle. 12. The joining element according to claim 1 , wherein the outer sleeve comprises a mesh that defines the lattice. 13. The joining element according to claim 12 , wherein the mesh comprises a plurality of threads. 14. The joining element according to claim 13 , wherein the plurality of threads are braided. 15. The joining element according to claim 13 , wherein the plurality of threads are interlaced together. 16. The joining element according to claim 13 , wherein the plurality of threads are arranged in a helical pattern around the core. 17. The joining element according to claim 13 , wherein each thread comprises a plurality of filaments. 18. The joining element according to claim 13 , wherein each thread comprises a polymer. 19. The joining element according to claim 18 , wherein the polymer comprises a polyester, polyamide, polyolefin, polyaramide, halogenated polymer, high-strength ladder polymer, polyetheretherketone, polycaprolactone, polydioxanone, or a combination thereof. 20. A joining element elongate in a longitudinal direction comprising: a suture material having dimensions adapted for attachment to a soft tissue or a soft tissue prosthesis, the suture material including: an inner core that extends substantially along the longitudinal direction, the inner core comprising a swellable core material incorporated with an osmotically active substance; and, an outer sleeve of one or more textile threads surrounding at least a portion of the inner core along the longitudinal direction and defining a length in the longitudinal direction between opposed ends of the outer sleeve, the outer sleeve including a lattice that defines at least one angle with respect to the longitudinal direction; wherein upon exposure of fluid to the osmotically active substance, the osmotically active substance causes the swellable core material to swell so that the inner core swells against the outer sleeve along a direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction to thereby increase the at least one angle and decrease the length of the sleeve with respect to the longitudinal direction. 21. The joining element according to claim 20 , wherein the core material is a polymer, a gel, or combination thereof. 22. The joining element according to claim 21 , wherein the core material is a polymer filament. 23. The joining element according to claim 21 , wherein the core material comprises a gel. 24. The joining element according to claim 23 , wherein the osmotically active substance is disposed in the gel. 25. The joining element according to claim 21 , wherein the core material comprises a thermoplastic elastomer, a crosslinked elastomer, or a combination thereof. 26. The joining element according to claim 21 , wherein the core material is a polymer, and the polymer comprises silicone, polyurethane, elastin, collagen, or a combination thereof. 27. The joining element according to claim 21 , wherein the core material defines a fluid permeable membrane, wherein the fluid permeable membrane is expandable, and wherein the osmotically active substance is disposed within the membrane. 28.
