Methods for communicating a ranking characterizing a portion of a roadway include: (a) ranking at least one segment of a roadway based on an amount of deviation between a true driving behavior on the at least one segment of the roadway and an expected driving behavior predefined for the at least one segment of the roadway; and (b) communicating the ranking to a client. Apparatuses for communicating a ranking characterizing a portion of a roadway are described.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: calculating, by a processor for a plurality of vehicles traveling on a roadway, an amount of deviation between a true driving behavior on a plurality of segments of a roadway and an expected driving behavior predefined for the plurality of segments of the roadway; ranking, by the processor, the plurality of segments based on the amount of deviation by the plurality of vehicles; and generating, by the processor, a message for a client in response to the ranking of the plurality of segments, wherein the client comprises an autonomously operated vehicle. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: sending, by the processor, the message to the client, wherein the message indicates a warning for a driver. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of segments together characterize a contiguous stretch of the roadway. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: displaying the ranking via a navigation system, a mobile phone, a tablet, a projection, or a combination thereof. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ranking comprises color-coding the amount of deviation. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the color-coding includes a first color when the deviation indicates safe travel and a second color when the deviation indicates dangerous travel. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message comprises a driving instruction for a computer processor aboard the autonomously operated vehicle. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message comprises an alert to the client if the amount of deviation exceeds a predefined threshold. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising: selecting the personalized threshold below which the alert is not issued to the client. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the true driving behavior is determined based on historical data for the segment of the roadway. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the true driving behavior is determined based on real time data for the segment of the roadway. 12. An apparatus comprising: at least one processor; and at least one memory including computer program code for one or more programs, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: calculate an amount of deviation between a true driving behavior on a plurality of segments of a roadway and an expected driving behavior predefined for the plurality of segments of the roadway; rank the plurality of segments of the roadway based on the amount of deviation between a true driving behavior and an expected driving behavior on the plurality of segments of the roadway; and generate a communication with data indicative of the rank for a client device associated with an autonomously operated vehicle. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: display the rank via a navigation system, a mobile phone, a tablet, a projection, or a combination thereof. 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: assign different colors to different amounts of deviation. 15. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: issue an alert to the client device if the amount of deviation exceeds a predefined threshold. 16. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: receive a selection of a personalized threshold below which the alert is not issued to the client device. 17. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following: select a driving profile for the autonomously operated vehicle based on the rank of the plurality of segments of the roadway, wherein a cautious driving profile is ranked differently than an impatient driving profile. 18. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the true driving behavior is determined based on historical data for each of the plurality of segments of the roadway. 19. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the true driving behavior is determined based on real time data for each of the plurality of segments of the roadway. 20. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a programmed processor, the storage medium comprising instructions for: ranking at least one segment of a roadway based on an amount of deviation between a true driving behavior by vehicles on the at least one segment of the roadway and an expected driving behavior predefined for the at least one segment of the roadway; generating, in response to the ranking of the at least one segment of the roadway, a message for a client device for generating a driving instruction for an autonomous vehicle.
