Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods, systems, and apparatus transferring power between the grid and an electric vehicle are disclosed. The apparatus may include at least one vehicle communication port for interfacing with electric vehicle equipment (EVE) and a processor coupled to the at least one vehicle communication port to establish communication with the EVE, receive EVE attributes from the EVE, and transmit electric vehicle station equipment (EVSE) attributes to the EVE. Power may be transferred between the grid and the electric vehicle by maintaining EVSE attributes, establishing communication with the EVE, and transmitting the EVSE maintained attributes to the EVE.

What is claimed: 1. A method for transferring power and information between a power grid and an electric vehicle, the method comprising: maintaining, by an electric vehicle station equipment (EVSE) separate from the electric vehicle and electrically coupled to the power grid, EVSE attributes; establishing, by the EVSE, communication with an electric vehicle equipment (EVE) inside the electric vehicle; transmitting, by the EVSE, the EVSE attributes to the EVE, the EVSE attributes including authorization to backfeed power to the power grid; receiving, by the EVSE, an instruction from the EVE, the instruction automatically generated by the EVE based on the EVSE attributes, the instruction including a communication to backfeed the power to the power grid; and energizing, by the EVSE, an electrical connector of the EVSE to electrically couple or decouple a corresponding electrical connector of the EVE with the power grid to supply power between the electric vehicle and the power grid in accordance with the instruction. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving EVE attributes from the EVE. 3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: energizing a contactor positioned between the EVE and the power grid. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: determining if payment is required; wherein the energizing step energizes the contactor if the payment is not required. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining if the payment has been authorized; and wherein the energizing step energizes the contactor if the payment is required and the payment is authorized. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: recording usage of the EVE by the EVSE; and transmitting the recorded usage to an electric charging vendor. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: an agent entering the EVSE attributes into the EVSE along with authorization codes to restrict or enable specific electrical services to or from the electric vehicle, those restrictions including electrical limits, only at approved sites, only by approved vehicles, only when authorized via employee ID and a digital signature to provide tamper-resistance, the digital signature indicating that the agent is authorized. 8. The method of claim 1 : wherein the EVSE attributes transmitted, by the EVSE, includes power charging capabilities of the EVSE; wherein the instruction received, by the EVSE, from the EVE, is generated based on the power charging capabilities of the EVSE; and wherein the electrical connector is energized, by the EVSE, for a specified time, at a specified rate and in a specified direction in accordance with the instruction. 9. A system for transferring power between a power grid and an electric vehicle, the system comprising: electric vehicle station equipment (EVSE) separate from the electric vehicle and electrically coupled to the power grid, and including EVSE attributes; the EVSE configured to: establish communication with an electric vehicle equipment (EVE) inside the electric vehicle; transmit the EVSE attributes to the EVE; receive an instruction from the EVE, the instruction automatically generated by the EVE based on the EVSE attributes; and energize an electrical connector of the EVSE to electrically couple or decouple a corresponding electrical connector of the EVE with the power grid to supply power between the electric vehicle and the power grid in accordance with the instruction, wherein the EVSE attributes transmitted, by the EVSE, includes power charging capabilities of the EVSE; wherein the instruction received, by the EVSE, from the EVE, is generated based on the power charging capabilities of the EVSE; and wherein the electrical connector is energized, by the EVSE, for a specified time, at a specified rate and in a specified direction in accordance with the instruction. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: receive EVE attributes directly from the EVE. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: energize a contactor positioned between the EVE and the power grid. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: determine if payment is required; wherein the EVSE energizes the contactor if the payment is not required. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: determine if the payment has been authorized; and wherein the EVSE energizes the contactor if the payment is required and the payment is authorized. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: record usage of the EVSE by the EVE; and transmit the recorded usage to an electric charging vendor. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the EVSE is further configured to: enter EVSE attributes along with authorization codes to restrict or enable specific electrical services only by approved vehicles, only when authorized via employee ID and encryption to provide tamper-resistance. 16. An electric vehicle station equipment (EVSE) electrically coupled to a power grid for transferring power between the power grid and an electric vehicle equipment (EVE) of an electric vehicle, the EVSE comprising: at least one vehicle communication port separate from the electric vehicle for interfacing with the EVE inside the electric vehicle; an electrical connector separate from the electric vehicle for electrically coupling or decoupling the electric vehicle to the power grid; a processor separate from the electric vehicle and coupled to the at least one vehicle communication port, the processor configured to: establish communication with the EVE via the at least one communication port, receive EVE attributes from the EVE, transmit EVSE attributes to the EVE, the EVSE attributes including authorization to backfeed power to the power grid, receive an instruction from the EVE, the instruction automatically generated by the EVE based on the EVSE attributes, the instruction including a communication to backfeed the power to the power grid, and energize the electrical connector to electrically couple or decouple a corresponding electrical connector of the EVE with the power grid to supply power between the electric vehicle and the power grid in accordance with the instruction. 17.
