Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fastener installation tool and related method are provided for installing fasteners in boards, where the boards are installed immediately adjacent one another, without a gap established therebetween. The tool can include an alignment projection that projects a preselected distance downwardly from a lower surface of the tool. The alignment projection can be disposed between opposing corners of first and second boards to install a fastener without establishing a gap between the boards. This construction can be suitable for installing boards constructed from materials that shrink over time, such as wet, treated lumber or other materials, and even non-shrinkable boards where tighter spacing is desired. A related method of installation is provided.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A fastener installation tool comprising: a frame including a handle and a frame bottom surface, the frame bottom surface configured to be placed atop and engage a second board at a second board top surface; a guide defining an angled bore having a longitudinal axis corresponding to a trajectory of a fastener rotated within the angled bore, the guide having a first opening into which the fastener is inserted into the angled bore and a second opening from which the fastener exits the angled bore, the angled bore being non-orthogonal relative to the frame bottom surface; an alignment projection extending downwardly from the bottom surface of the frame a preselected distance, the alignment projection including an inner engagement surface oppositely disposed from and at a preselected angle relative to an outer engagement surface, the inner and outer engagement surfaces being non-parallel with one another, wherein the outer engagement surface is configured to wedge against a first board corner of a first board laying in abutment with the second board such that a first board side surface of the first board abuts a second board side surface of the second board, the first board independently constructed from the second board, the first board corner above the first board side surface of the first board, so as to establish a preselected angle between the longitudinal axis of the bore and the second board side surface of the second board at which the fastener is advanced into the second board, wherein the inner engagement surface and outer engagement surface are configured so that when the bottom surface is installed atop and engages the second board top surface of the second board and the outer engagement surface wedges adjacent the first board corner, the inner engagement surface and the outer engagement surface are incapable of extending downwardly beside the first board side surface of the first board and the second board side surface of the second board when the first board and the second board are in abutment. 2. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 wherein the inner engagement surface is configured to engage a second board corner, above the second board side surface. 3. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 wherein the guide and alignment projection are formed as a first monolithic part, the first monolithic part selectively removable from the frame and interchangeable with a second monolithic part including another guide having at least one of a differently shaped alignment projection and a spacer that extends a different distance from the frame bottom surface than the alignment projection of the first monolithic part. 4. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 , wherein the guide defines a material ejection port between the first opening and the second opening, wherein the material ejection port is adjacent and above the outer engagement surface, and below the first opening. 5. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 , wherein the outer engagement surface is substantially planar, wherein the inner engagement surface is substantially planar, wherein the outer engagement surface and inner engagement surface are non-parallel and offset at an angle relative to one another, and wherein the inner engagement surface transitions to the outer engagement surface at a terminal end forming a lowest portion of the alignment projection. 6. The fastener installation tool of claim 5 wherein the terminal end is downwardly projecting and rounded, whereby the terminal end is impaired from at least one of marring and gouging at least one of the first board and the second board. 7. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 wherein the alignment projection forms a generally triangular shape when viewed from the side, with the outer and inner engagement surfaces forming opposing legs of the generally triangular shape. 8. The fastener installation tool of claim 5 wherein the terminal end is rounded to include at least one radius being between about 0.004 inches to about 1.169 inches. 9. The fastener installation tool of claim 1 wherein the outer engagement surface and inner engagement surface are disposed at an angle of about 10° to about 90° relative to one another. 10. A fastener installation tool comprising: a frame including a frame bottom surface configured to be placed atop and engage a top surface of a second board when a second board side surface of the second board abuts a first board side surface of a first board; a guide defining an angled bore, the guide having a first opening into which a fastener is inserted into the angled bore, and a second opening from which a fastener exits the angled bore, the angled bore being non-orthogonal relative to the frame bottom surface: an alignment projection extending downwardly from the frame a preselected distance, the alignment projection including an inner engagement surface disposed at a preselected angle relative to an outer engagement surface, the inner and outer engagement surfaces being non-parallel with one another, wherein the outer engagement surface is configured to wedge against a first board corner of the first board when the second board side surface of the second board abuts the first board side surface of the first board so as to set a depth relative to the second board side surface of the second board at which the fastener can be advanced, while the frame bottom surface engages the top surface of the second board, the first board corner being of the first board placed in abutment with the second board, wherein the inner engagement surface and outer engagement surface form a wedge terminating at a terminal end, wherein the tool is void of any spacers or projections configured to establish a gap between the first board side surface of the first board and the second board side surface of the second board. 11. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 wherein the wedge is triangular shaped. 12. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 , wherein the alignment projection extends downward a distance from the frame, wherein the distance is less than a depth of a crevice formed between the first board corner of the first board and a second board corner of the second board, so that the alignment projection is incapable of extending downward beside the first board side surface of the first board and the second board side surface of the second board. 13. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 , wherein the outer engagement surface is substantially parallel to the angled bore. 14. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 , wherein the angled bore defines a depth between the first opening and the second opening, wherein the fastener defines a length, wherein the length is less than the depth, whereby upon initial rotation, the fastener is fully disposed in the angled bore to prevent or impair wobble of the rotating fastener therein. 15. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 , wherein the angled bore defines an internal diameter and the fastener includes a head having an external diameter, wherein the external diameter is about 0.001 inches to about 0.05 inches less than the internal diameter. 16. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 wherein the inner engagement surface of the alignment projection defines the second opening. 17. The fastener installation tool of claim 10 wherein the fastener is shorter than the angled bore. 18. A fastener installation tool c
