A system for locating a hidden utility, comprising: a portable locator for tracing the hidden utility, the locator including a magnetic field measurement module for receiving a magnetic field emitted from the hidden utility and a wireless data receiver module; and a portable transmitter for providing a current signal to the buried utility, the portable transmitter including a wireless data transmission module for sending information associated with the provided current signal, including amplitude information of the provided current signal and current phase information of the current signal, to the wireless data receiver module; wherein the portable locator includes a display module for providing a visual display based at least in part on the information associated with the current signal and wherein the visual display includes a representation of a ratio of the provided current signal to a current signal measured by the locator. 2. The system of claim 1 , further including circuitry for directly coupling the current signal to the buried utility. 3. The system of claim 1 , further including circuitry for inductively coupling the current signal to the buried utility. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the portable locator includes a display module for providing a visual display based at least in part on the information associated with the current signal. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the portable transmitter is configured to provide the current signal to the hidden utility at two or more frequencies. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the signals at two or more frequencies are provided simultaneously. 7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the signals at two or more frequencies are provided sequentially. 8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the signals at two or more frequencies are provided responsive to a command from the portable locator. 9. A system for locating a hidden utility, comprising: a portable locator for tracing the hidden utility, the locator including a magnetic field measurement module for receiving a magnetic field emitted from the hidden utility and a data receiver module; and a portable transmitter for providing a current signal to the buried utility, the portable transmitter including a data transmission module for sending information associated with the provided current signal, including amplitude information of the provided current signal and current phase information of the current signal, to the receiver module; wherein the portable locator includes a display module for providing a visual display based at least in part on the information associated with the current signal and wherein the visual display includes a representation of a ratio of the provided current signal to a current signal measured by the locator. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the ratio is provided as a percentage of the measured current to the provided current signal. 11. A system for locating a hidden utility, comprising: a portable locator for tracing the hidden utility, the locator including a magnetic field measurement module for receiving a magnetic field emitted from the hidden utility and a data receiver module; and a portable transmitter for providing a current signal to the buried utility, the portable transmitter including a data transmission module for sending information associated with the provided current signal, including current amplitude information, current phase information, or both current amplitude and phase information, to the receiver module; wherein the portable transmitter is configured to measure current amplitude and phase and provide the current signal to the hidden utility at two or more frequencies, and wherein the portable locator is configured to; receive the current signal provided at two or more frequencies; determine a relative change in measured depth of the buried utility; extrapolate a depth measurement to a zero frequency; and provide a display of the extrapolated zero frequency depth measurement. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the two or more frequencies includes signals at three or more frequencies and wherein the determined relative change in measured receiver depth is compared to a skin depth model to determine variations in ground return current due to local variations in soil conductivity. 13.
