A method of treating prolapse of a vagina is provided by placing a reinforcing implant inside of the vagina. The method includes inserting a porous sheet of material inside of the vagina through a natural vaginal opening of the patient. The porous sheet of material is an implantable support that is adapted to integrate with tissue inside of the vagina to reinforce and support at least an apical portion of the vagina. The method includes maintaining the apical portion of the vagina in an anatomically natural position by supporting the porous sheet of material inside of the vagina relative to one of a sacrum and a ligament of the patient.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of treating prolapse of a vagina, the method comprising: inserting a porous sheet of material inside of the vagina through a natural vaginal opening; placing the porous sheet of material into contact with tissue of an interior surface of an apical portion of the vagina, where the porous sheet of material is adapted to integrate with the tissue of the interior surface of the apical portion of the vagina to reinforce and support at least the apical portion of the vagina; supporting the porous sheet of material against the tissue of the interior surface of the apical portion of the vagina; and anchoring the porous sheet of material to one of a sacrum and a ligament of a patient to maintain the apical portion of the vagina in an anatomically natural position. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is biodegradable. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material has a perimeter provided with relief portions removed from the perimeter such that the porous sheet of material is adapted to conform to the interior surface of the apical portion of the vagina. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material has a substantially circular perimeter. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is selected from the group consisting of autograft material, allograft material, xenograft material, and synthetic material. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is elastic. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is a polypropylene mesh. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is a knitted mesh. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous sheet of material is a mesh with a basis weight in a range between 15-200 g/m 2 . 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein supporting the porous sheet of material comprises: inserting a plug inside of the vagina through the natural vaginal opening; and supporting the porous sheet of material in contact with the tissue of the interior surface of the vagina with the plug. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the plug is biodegradable. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the anchoring comprises implanting an anchor in the patient and attaching a first end of the anchor to the plug and attaching a second end of the anchor to the one of the sacrum and the ligament of the patient. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the attaching the first end of the anchor to the plug comprises attaching the first end of the anchor through a hole formed in a distal nose of the plug. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the anchor is biodegradable. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the plug includes a base opposite an apex, where the base is wider than the apex and an exterior surface of the apex is shaped to conform to the interior surface of the apical portion of the vagina. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the porous sheet of material is integrated with the plug to provide a monolithic reinforcing implant. 17. A method of treating prolapse of a vagina, the method comprising: inserting an implant comprising a porous sheet of material integrated with a plug inside of the vagina through a natural vaginal opening; placing the porous sheet of material into contact with tissue of an interior surface of an apical portion of the vagina, where the porous sheet of material is adapted to integrate with the tissue of the interior surface of the apical portion of the vagina and the plug is adapted to reinforce and support at least the apical portion of the vagina; securing an anchor to the implant and to one of a sacrum and a ligament of a patient; and maintaining the apical portion of the vagina in an anatomically natural position.
