A prosthetic valve assembly for implantation in a patient's circulatory system includes a stent, a valve member coupled to the stent and defining a preferred landing zone relative to anatomical structures in the patient's circulatory system, and at least one marker positioned in a predetermined relationship relative to the landing zone of the valve member, the marker being visually distinguishable from the stent using an imaging technique. By observing the marker, the prosthetic valve assembly may be implanted in the patient so that certain ones of the anatomical structures lie within the landing zone.

The invention claimed is: 1. A prosthetic valve assembly for implantation in a patient's circulatory system, the valve assembly comprising: a stent having an expanded condition, a collapsed condition, an inlet end, an outlet end, and a length in a longitudinal direction, the stent having an annulus section adjacent the inlet end, an aortic section adjacent the outlet end, and a sinus section intermediate the annulus section and the aortic section, the stent in the expanded condition increasing in diameter from the annulus section to the aortic section, the stent including a plurality of commissure features disposed in the annulus section at spaced locations around a circumference of the stent and a plurality of receptacles each positioned at a spaced distance from both the inlet end of the stent and the outlet end of the stent, each of the commissure features extending from a first selected distance from the inlet end to a second selected distance from the inlet end, and each of the receptacles being located on the stent at a position offset in a circumferential direction from the spaced locations of the commissure features; a valve member coupled to the stent so as to define on the stent a preferred landing zone between the inlet end of the stent and the commissure features, the landing zone having a first boundary, a second boundary, a length in the longitudinal direction less than the length of the stent and a substantially uniform diameter along its length; and a marker including a radiopaque material coupled to each of the receptacles, the receptacles being located at predetermined positions relative to the landing zone, the markers identifying the first and second boundaries of the landing zone, the markers being visually distinguishable from the stent using an imaging technique and being operable to assist positioning of the prosthetic valve assembly in the longitudinal direction relative to the anatomical structures in the patient's circulatory system. 2. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the markers include three markers defining a plane having a fixed position relative to the landing zone. 3. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the markers have a greater radiopacity than that of the stent. 4. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the markers have a predetermined geometric shape. 5. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the markers include a plurality of markers each having a predetermined geometric shape, the shape of one of the markers being different from the shape of another of the markers. 6. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the markers are formed from a bioabsorbable material. 7. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the receptacles are positioned on the stent in pairs, each of the pairs including a first receptacle at a first spaced distance from the inlet end of the stent and a second receptacle at a second spaced distance from the inlet end of the stent and offset in the circumferential direction from the first receptacle, the second spaced distance being greater than the first spaced distance. 8. The prosthetic valve assembly as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the second spaced distance is between the first selected distance from the inlet end and the second selected distance from the inlet end.
