An interchangeable shaft assembly for a surgical instrument that includes first and second drive systems. The interchangeable shaft assembly is configured for removable attachment to a housing of the surgical instrument. Various embodiments include a latch system that enables the interchangeable shaft assembly to be detached from the housing when the first drive system is unactuated but prevents the interchangeable shaft assembly from being detached from the housing when the first drive system is in an actuated position.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical instrument, comprising: a housing; an interchangeable shaft assembly removably couplable to the housing, the interchangeable shaft assembly including an end effector comprising: a first end effector portion operably responsive to first drive motions applied thereto; and a second end effector portion operably responsive to second drive motions applied thereto and wherein the surgical instrument further comprises: a first drive system operably supported by the housing, the first drive system movable from a first unactuated position to a second actuated position, the first drive system being configured to apply the first drive motions to the interchangeable shaft assembly operably coupled to the housing when the first drive system is in the second actuated position; a second drive system operably supported by the housing, the second drive system movable from an unfired position to a fired position, the second drive system being configured to apply the second drive motions to the interchangeable shaft assembly when the second drive system is in the fired position; a latch system for removably coupling the interchangeable shaft assembly to the housing such that when the first drive system is in the first unactuated position, the interchangeable shaft assembly is detachable from the housing and when the first drive system is in the second actuated position, the latch system prevents the interchangeable shaft assembly from being detached from the housing; wherein the interchangeable shaft assembly further comprises a chassis member configured for removable engagement with the housing wherein the latch system comprises a lock member selectively movable between a locked position and an unlocked position such that when in the locked position, the lock member retainingly couples the chassis member to the housing and when the lock member is in the unlocked position, the chassis member may be detached from the housing, wherein the housing defines a longitudinal shaft axis and wherein the chassis member is engageable with the housing along an installation axis that is perpendicular to the longitudinal shaft axis, and wherein the interchangeable shaft assembly further comprises: a first shaft assembly configured to operably transmit the first drive motions to the first end effector portion; and a first shaft yoke operably supporting the first shaft assembly and configured for releasable engagement to a corresponding portion of the first drive system, said first shaft yoke configured to prevent the lock member from being movable to the unlocked position when the first drive system is in the second actuated position. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 wherein the end effector further comprises a channel configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein and wherein the first end effector portion comprises an anvil movably supported relative to the channel, the anvil being movable between open and closed positions relative to the channel in response to the first drive motions applied thereto. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 wherein the first drive system comprises a closure link supported for axial movement within the housing in response to actuation motions applied thereto, the closure link configured for removable engagement with the first shaft yoke. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 wherein the second end effector portion comprises a knife bar supported for axial travel within the surgical staple cartridge supported in the channel. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 3 wherein the first drive system further comprises a closure trigger movably supported by the housing for selective travel between an unactuated trigger position and an actuated trigger position, the closure trigger operably coupled to the closure link. 6. A surgical instrument, comprising: a housing; an interchangeable shaft assembly removably couplable to the housing, the interchangeable shaft assembly including an end effector comprising: a first end effector portion operably responsive to first drive motions applied thereto; and a second end effector portion operably responsive to second drive motions applied thereto and wherein the surgical instrument further comprises: a first drive system operably supported by the housing, the first drive system movable from a first unactuated position to a second actuated position, the first drive system being configured to apply the first drive motions to the interchangeable shaft assembly operably coupled to the housing when the first drive system is in the second actuated position; a second drive system operably supported by the housing, the second drive system movable from an unfired position to a fired position, the second drive system being configured to apply the second drive motions to the interchangeable shaft assembly when the second drive system is in the fired position; a latch system for removably coupling the interchangeable shaft assembly to the housing such that when the first drive system is in the first unactuated position, the interchangeable shaft assembly is detachable from the housing and when the first drive system is in the second actuated position, the latch system prevents the interchangeable shaft assembly from being detached from the housing; and wherein the interchangeable shaft assembly further comprises a chassis member configured for removable engagement with the housing wherein the latch system comprises a lock member selectively movable between a locked position and an unlocked position such that when in the locked position, the lock member retainingly couples the chassis member to the housing and when the lock member is in the unlocked position, the chassis member may be detached from the housing wherein the housing defines a longitudinal shaft axis and wherein the chassis member is engageable with the housing along an installation axis that is perpendicular to the longitudinal shaft axis. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 wherein the chassis member includes at least one tapered attachment portion configured to be slidably received in a corresponding dovetail slot in the housing. 8. The surgical instrument of claim 6 wherein the housing comprises a handle. 9. A surgical cutting and fastening instrument comprising: a housing; an interchangeable shaft assembly removably couplable to the housing, the interchangeable shaft assembly including an end effector comprising: a channel configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein; an anvil movably supported relative to the channel and being movable between open and closed positions relative to the channel; and a knife bar supported for axial travel within a surgical staple cartridge supported in the channel in response to firing motions applied thereto and wherein the surgical instrument further comprises: a closure system operably supported by the housing, the closure system movable from a first unactuated position to a second actuated position, the closure system being configured to apply first closure motions to the anvil through the interchangeable shaft assembly when the closure system is in the first unactuated position; a motor-driven firing system operably supported by the housing, the motor-driven firing system movable from an unfired position to a fired position, the motor-driven firing system being configured to apply the firing motions to the knife bar through the interchangeable shaft assembly when the motor-driven firing system is in the fired position; and a latch system for removably coupling the interchangeable shaft assembly to the housing such that when the closure system is in the first unactuated position, the interchangeable shaft assembl
