Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An arbitrary customer instance is transferred from a customer environment to a target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a transferred image. An image adjustment plan, capturing at least one adjustment required to render the transferred image compliant with standards of the target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment, is formulated. The image adjustment plan is executed to adjust the transferred image to obtain an adjusted image compliant with standards of the target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. The adjusted image is on-boarded into the managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a standard image thereof.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: transferring an arbitrary source instance currently being used by a customer in a customer environment to execute a workload of said customer from said customer environment to a target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a transferred image, said customer environment being external to and different from said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment, said arbitrary source instance being non-compliant with standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; formulating an image adjustment plan capturing at least one adjustment required to render said transferred image compliant with said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment, said image adjustment plan comprising a plurality of standardized migration rules; bootstrapping an adjustment orchestrator with said plurality of standardized migration rules, said adjustment orchestrator having a rule evaluation engine comprising a set of corresponding condition-action pairs; executing said image adjustment plan to adjust said transferred image to obtain an adjusted image compliant with said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment, by evaluating said migration rules with said rule evaluation engine of said adjustment orchestrator and undertaking actions for those condition-action pairs with satisfied conditions; and on-boarding said adjusted image into said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a standard image thereof, such that said arbitrary source instance is now migrated from said customer environment to said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as said standard image thereof; wherein, in said transferring, formulating, executing, and on-boarding steps, said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment has a management layer; further comprising managing said standard image with said management layer together with, and in the same manner as, at least one application created from a managed infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment application golden master and executing said workload of said customer in said managed infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment using an instance of said standard image; wherein, in said executing step, said transferred image is adjusted online while running in said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said adjustment orchestrator comprises an online orchestrator and wherein said executing step comprises executing said image adjustment plan with said online orchestrator interacting with said instance in said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said executing step comprises executing said image adjustment plan with said adjustment orchestrator interacting with a virtualization manager of said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said executing step comprises executing said image adjustment plan with said adjustment orchestrator interacting with a supporting tool of said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said executing step comprises executing said image adjustment plan with said adjustment orchestrator which in turn comprises at least one of: an access enablement orchestrator which ensures that said adjusted image can be accessed by a management layer of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; an agent uninstall orchestrator which uninstalls unwanted software from said transferred image; an agent install orchestrator which installs required software to said transferred image; a patching orchestrator which ensures that said adjusted image has installed thereon patches required by said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; and a compliance orchestrator which ensures that said adjusted image conforms to said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said executing step comprises executing said image adjustment plan with said adjustment orchestrator by: using an access enablement orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator to ensure that said adjusted image can be accessed by a management layer of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; using an agent uninstall orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator to uninstall unwanted software from said transferred image; using an agent install orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator to install required software to said transferred image; using a patching orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator to ensure that said adjusted image has installed thereon patches required by said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; and using a compliance orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator to ensure that said adjusted image conforms to said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a system, wherein the system comprises distinct software modules, each of the distinct software modules being embodied on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, and wherein the distinct software modules comprise a transfer core component module, an adjustment plan maintenance component module, an adjustment orchestration module implementing said adjustment orchestrator, and a cloud management module; wherein: said transferring is carried out by said transfer core component module executing on at least one hardware processor within said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; said formulating is carried out by said adjustment plan maintenance component module executing on said at least one hardware processor within said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; said executing of said image adjustment plan is carried out by said adjustment orchestration module executing on said at least one hardware processor within said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment; and said on-boarding of said adjusted image is carried out by said cloud management module executing on said at least one hardware processor within said managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said formulating comprises at least one processor automatically generating said image adjustment plan. 9. The method of claim 5 , wherein said at least one orchestrator of said adjustment orchestrator is operative to detect a failure, fix the failure, rollback, and retry. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said migration rules uniformly encode adjustment recipes across different kinds of images. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein transferring said arbitrary customer interface from said customer environment to said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as said transferred image comprises capturing said arbitrary customer interface using one or more of physical-to-virtual (P2V) techniques and virtual-to-virtual (V2V) techniques. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said standards of said target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment comprise one or more of security standards, infrastructure standards, patch management standards, and infrastructure management system standards. 13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of analyzing the arbitrary customer interface for suitability for transfer to said t
