Methods for making specialty chemical products and chemical intermediates using hydroformylation are generally disclosed. Further, compositions and compounds formed using such methods are also disclosed. In some embodiments, methods are disclosed for refining a renewably sourced material, such as a natural oil, to form compositions, which can be further reacted employing the methods disclosed herein to form certain specialty chemical products or chemical intermediates.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for refining a natural oil derivative, comprising: providing a reactant composition comprising olefinic ester compounds, which are 9-dodecenoic acid esters; reacting the olefinic ester compounds with H 2 and CO in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst to form a product composition comprising (a) hydroformylation catalyst residues, and (b) formylated ester compounds or hydroxylated ester compounds; and separating at least a portion of the hydroformylation catalyst residues from other compounds from the product composition. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the product composition is a nonpolar composition having a single phase. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the product composition comprises a polar phase and a nonpolar phase. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the nonpolar phase comprises at least a portion of the formylated ester compounds or hydroxylated ester compounds. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the separating comprises carrying out a liquid-liquid extraction, wherein the extraction comprises removing a polar phase that comprises the hydroformylation catalyst resides from a nonpolar phase that comprises other compounds from the product composition. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the product composition comprises one or more formylated ester compounds. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the esters of 9-dodecenoic acid are derived from a process that comprises: providing one or more low-molecular-weight olefins and a natural oil feedstock comprising unsaturated esters; cross-metathesizing the low-molecular-weight olefins with the unsaturated esters to form a metathesized product comprising metathesized olefins and metathesized unsaturated esters; optionally separating at least a portion of the metathesized unsaturated esters from other components of the metathesized product; and optionally transesterifying the metathesized unsatutared esters with a low-molecular-weight alcohol. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the esters of 9-dodecenoic acid are 9-dodecenoic acid glycerides.
