A pipe joining material for connecting pipes and fittings and a method of making a pipe joining material are provided. The pipe joining material may include a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and/or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) and a bonding agent for the thermoplastic material.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of joining parts of a piping system comprising: (a) providing a first pipe or pipe fitting; (b) providing a second pipe or pipe fitting; and, (c) joining the first pipe or pipe fitting to the second pipe or pipe fitting by inserting the first pipe or pipe fitting into the second pipe or pipe fitting whereby a gap is positioned between an outer surface of the first pipe or pipe fitting and an inner surface of the second pipe or pipe fitting and injecting into the gap a liquid pipe joining material comprising: (i) a thermoplastic material comprising at least one of polyvinyl chloride and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, wherein the thermoplastic material comprises over 75% by weight of the pipe joining material based on the total weight of the pipe joining material; (ii) a bonding agent for the thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of polyamide, ethylene acrylate copolymer, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer, polyurethane, polyester, polyolefin, polycaprolactone, soy protein and styrene block co-polymer, wherein the pipe joining material secures the first pipe or pipe fitting to the second pipe or pipe fitting. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of: (1) heating a mixture of the thermoplastic material and the bonding agent to a forming temperature and shaping the mixture at the forming temperature; (2) cooling the shaped mixture to a temperature below the forming temperature to obtain a solid pipe joining material; and (3) subsequently liquefying the solid pipe joining material to obtain the liquid pipe joining material, wherein steps (1) and (2) are performed before step (c). 3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising selecting the pipe joining material to be solid at an ambient temperature and fluid at an application temperature. 4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising selecting the pipe joining material to be solid at an ambient temperature and fluid at an application temperature that is higher than the forming temperature. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a mixture of the thermoplastic material and the bonding agent is shaped into the form of a cylindrical tube or stick before step (c) and the method further comprises liquefying the cylindrical tube or stick to obtain the liquid pipe joining material. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the pipe joining material to be solid at an ambient temperature and fluid at an application temperature between 60 to 200° C. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the pipe joining material to be solid at an ambient temperature and fluid at an application temperature between 100 to 150° C. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bonding agent comprises polyimide. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first pipe or pipe fitting is made of PVC or CPVC and the second pipe or pipe fitting is made of PVC or CPVC.
