Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various embodiments of flanged containers that can be stacked in a nested relationship are disclosed so as to provide uniform spacing between the containers to facilitate reliable denesting thereof. The flanges and/or sidewalls of the containers may be provided with features that facilitate alignment and uniform spacing of the nested containers so that a denesting apparatus can reliably denest the containers. Other containers include sidewalls divided into two sections that serve to stabilize stacked container.

What is claimed is: 1. A nestable paperboard container, comprising: a sidewall comprising an upper perimeter and extending generally upwardly from a bottom wall; a flange extending outwardly from the upper perimeter of the sidewall, wherein the flange comprises: a top portion extending from the upper perimeter of the sidewall to an outer perimeter of the flange; a rolled portion extending from the outer perimeter of the flange and under the top portion, wherein the rolled portion forms an arc extending from the outer perimeter of the flange to an inner perimeter of the rolled portion, the inner perimeter being disposed between the outer perimeter and the sidewall; and an inner flap extending from the inner perimeter of the rolled portion toward the sidewall, wherein the inner flap comprises a first surface, a second surface, and an edge surface extending from the first surface to the second surface at a free edge of the inner flap, the entire inner flap extends along the top portion of the flange with the first surface in contact with the top portion of the flange, the top portion of the flange and the inner flap of the flange are substantially parallel with the bottom wall, and the edge surface of the inner flap abuts the sidewall adjacent the upper perimeter of the sidewall. 2. The container of claim 1 , wherein the inner flap extends along a lower surface of the top portion. 3. The container of claim 1 , wherein the entire inner flap is in face-to-face contact with a lower surface of the top portion. 4. The container of claim 1 , wherein the top portion and the inner flap are substantially flat. 5. The container of claim 1 , wherein the rolled portion extends downwardly with respect to the top portion of the flange and then curves inwardly toward the sidewall. 6. The container of claim 1 , wherein the rolled portion forms a curved outer peripheral edge of the flange shaped to define a cam for aiding the denesting of the container from like containers in a nested stack of containers. 7. The container of claim 1 , wherein the top portion of the flange defines an uppermost portion of the container. 8. The container of claim 1 , wherein the top portion of the flange and the sidewall form a corner at the upper perimeter of the sidewall, and the edge surface of the inner flap abuts the sidewall along the corner. 9. The container of claim 8 , wherein the first surface of the inner flap contacts the top portion along the corner. 10. A nestable paperboard container, comprising: a sidewall comprising an upper perimeter; a flange extending outwardly from the upper perimeter of the sidewall, wherein the flange comprises: a top portion extending from the upper perimeter of the sidewall to an outer perimeter of the flange; a rolled portion extending from the outer perimeter of the flange and under the top portion, wherein the rolled portion forms an arc extending from the outer perimeter of the flange to an inner perimeter of the rolled portion, the inner perimeter being disposed between the outer perimeter and the sidewall; and an inner flap extending from the inner perimeter of the rolled portion toward the sidewall, wherein the inner flap comprises a first surface, a second surface, and an edge surface extending from the first surface to the second surface at a free edge of the inner flap, the entire inner flap extends along the top portion of the flange with the first surface in contact with the top portion of the flange, and the edge surface of the inner flap abuts the sidewall in facing relation with the sidewall adjacent the upper perimeter of the sidewall. 11. The container of claim 10 , wherein the inner flap extends along a lower surface of the top portion. 12. The container of claim 10 , wherein the entire inner flap is in face-to-face contact with a lower surface of the top portion. 13. The container of claim 10 , wherein the top portion and the inner flap are substantially flat. 14. The container of claim 13 , wherein the sidewall extends generally upwardly from a bottom wall, and the top portion and the inner flap of the flange are substantially parallel with the bottom wall. 15. The container of claim 10 , wherein the rolled portion extends downwardly with respect to the top portion of the flange and then curves inwardly toward the sidewall. 16. The container of claim 10 , wherein the rolled portion forms a curved outer peripheral edge of the flange shaped to define a cam for aiding the denesting of the container from like containers in a nested stack of containers. 17. The container of claim 10 , wherein the top portion of the flange defines an uppermost portion of the container. 18. The container of claim 10 , wherein the top portion of the flange and the sidewall form a corner at the upper perimeter of the sidewall, and the edge surface of the inner flap abuts the sidewall along the corner. 19. The container of claim 18 , wherein the first surface of the inner flap contacts the top portion along the corner. 20. The container of claim 10 , wherein a corner is formed between the upper perimeter of the sidewall and the flange, and the edge surface of the inner flap is at least partially disposed in the corner. 21. The container of claim 10 , wherein the edge surface of the inner flap is in face-to-face contact with the sidewall.
