Official abstract text for this publication.
A stent delivery system can include a core member, first and second restraints, and a stent engagement component. The core member can have a distal segment. The first and second restraints can be coupled to the core member distal segment and axially spaced apart from each other to provide an axial gap. The first and second restraints can each have an outer profile that tapers radially inwardly in directions away from the gap. The stent engagement component can be at least partially disposed in the axial gap between the first and second restraints such that the component is slidably and rotatably coupled to the core member distal segment.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of delivering a stent delivery system, the method comprising: inserting the delivery system into a curved path, the delivery system comprising a catheter, a core member disposed within the catheter, first and second restraints coupled to the core member, a stent engagement component coupled to the core member between the first and second restraints, and a stent extending over the first and second restraints, the first and second restraints each having a longitudinally tapered end; and causing the core member to bend in the curved path without causing the first and second restraints to compress the stent against an inner wall of the catheter, wherein causing the core member to bend causes the stent, positioned over the first and second restraints, to undergo the bend without causing the first and second restraints to contact an inner surface of the stent. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second restraints each have an outer profile that tapers radially inwardly in directions away from each other. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stent engagement component is rotatably coupled to the core member, the method further comprising rotating the core member relative to the stent engagement component. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first restraint is positioned distally of the second restraint, the method further comprising advancing the core member until the first restraint is determined to be positioned adjacent to a distal end of the catheter. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the stent engagement component comprises an engagement member configured to cooperate with the catheter inner wall to grip the stent to move the stent within the catheter, the method further comprising holding an axial position of the core member relative to the catheter, when the first restraint is determined to be positioned adjacent to the distal end of the catheter, until initial placement of the stent is determined to be correct. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the delivery system comprises a first radiopaque marker, the catheter comprises a second radiopaque marker longitudinally movable relative to the first radiopaque marker, and the advancing comprises longitudinally aligning the first and second radiopaque markers such that the system achieves a pre-release position beyond which additional distal advancement of the core member permits release of the stent from the delivery system. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first restraint comprises the first radiopaque marker, a distal portion of the catheter comprises the second radiopaque marker, and the advancing comprises observing an image of the first radiopaque marker and the second radiopaque marker as the core member is advanced relative to the catheter. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second radiopaque marker is positioned at the catheter distal end, and the advancing comprises longitudinally aligning the first restraint with the catheter distal end. 9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising advancing the first and second restraints distally of the catheter distal end such that a portion of the stent, positioned over the first and second restraints, is released and the stent is disengaged from the delivery system. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the stent, positioned over the first and second restraints, undergoes a bend of at least about 30°. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the causing comprises causing a portion of the stent, positioned over the first and second restraints, to undergo a bend of at least about 45° without causing the first and second restraints to compress the stent against the inner wall of the catheter. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the causing comprises causing a portion of the stent, positioned over the first and second restraints, to undergo a bend of at least about 60° without causing the first and second restraints to compress the stent against the inner wall of the catheter. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delivery system further comprises third and fourth restraints coupled to the core member proximally of the first and second restraints, the third and fourth restraints being spaced apart to provide a gap wherein a proximal stent engagement member is coupled to the core member, a portion of the stent extending over the second, third, and fourth restraints, wherein the causing comprises causing the stent portion to undergo the bend without causing the second, third, and fourth restraints to compress the stent first portion against the inner wall of the catheter. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the causing comprises causing the stent portion to undergo the bend without causing the second, third, and fourth restraints to contact an inner surface of the stent.
