Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus for reading out information from an information carrier includes a reading unit for reading out user information and access information from the information carrier. The user information are stored in a first region of the information carrier and the access information are stored in a second region of the information carrier. The apparatus further includes an access controller for providing access to the user information in dependence on the access information. The access information are stored in a first portion of the second region, and the dummy information are stored in a second portion of the second region according to a similar format as used for storing the access information.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for reading out information from an information carrier, the apparatus comprising: a reader configured for reading out user information and access information from the information carrier, the user information being stored in a first region of the information carrier and the access information being stored in a second region of the information carrier, wherein the second region is different from the first region and is devoid of user information, and wherein the first region for storing the user information follows the second region and is between the second region and a lead-out zone of the information carrier; and a controller configured for providing access to the user information depending on the access information; wherein the access information is stored in a first portion of the second region, and wherein dummy information is stored in a second portion of the second region according to a similar format as used for storing the access information in order to hide the access information. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the second region is a remaining portion of the second region so that the first portion and the second portion form the second region. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to initially accesses the second region when reading the information carrier. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second region is one of a side channel and a Permanent Information & Control data (PIC) zone of the information carrier. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a position of the second region is hidden on the information carrier. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a detector for detecting a position of the second region. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a calculator for calculating a decryption key using the access information for decrypting the user information. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the calculator further uses a random number for calculating the decryption key. 9. A method of hiding access information on an information carrier, the information carrier comprising user information stored in a first region of the information carrier and the access information being for accessing the user information, the method comprising the acts of: storing the access information in a first portion of a second region of the information carrier, wherein the second region is different from the first region and is devoid of user information; and storing dummy information in a second portion of the second region different from the first portion according to a similar format as used for storing the access information in order to hide the access information wherein the first region for storing the user information follows the second region and is between the second region and a lead-out zone of the information carrier. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second portion of the second region is a remaining portion of the second region so that the first portion and the second portion form the second region. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second region is initially accessed by an apparatus for at least one of playing and recording the information carrier when the apparatus initially accesses the information carrier. 12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the act of detecting a position of the second region. 13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the act of calculating a decryption key using the access information for decrypting the user information. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the act of calculating further uses a random number for calculating the decryption key. 15. A tangible computer-readable storage medium, that is not a transitory propagating signal or wave, for insertion into a reading apparatus for reading access information for reading user information from the; the medium comprising: a first region comprising the user information; a second region having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion comprising access control information and the second portion comprising dummy information, wherein the second region is different from the first region and is devoid of user information, wherein the first region for storing the user information follows the second region and is between the second region and a lead-out zone of the medium, and wherein the dummy information is stored in the second portion of the second region according to a similar format as used for storing the access control information in the first portion of the second region in order to hide the access information. 16. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the second portion of the second region is a remaining portion of the second region so that the first portion and the second portion form the second region. 17. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the second region is initially accessed by an apparatus for at least one of playing and recording the medium when the apparatus initially accesses the medium. 18. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the second region is one of a side channel and a Permanent Information & Control data (PIC) zone of the medium. 19. The medium of claim 15 , further comprising position bits indicating a position of the second region. 20. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the format of the dummy information reduces a noise difference between reading the access information and the dummy information, sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference. 21. The method of claim 9 , wherein the format of the dummy information reduces a noise difference between reading the access information and the dummy information, sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference. 22. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the format of the dummy information reduces a noise difference between reading the access information and the dummy information, sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference. 23. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the dummy information is devoid of access information. 24. The method of claim 9 , wherein the dummy information is devoid of access information. 25. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the dummy information is devoid of access information. 26. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the dummy information is written in other parts of the information carrier, including the first region, and the format of the dummy information is selected to reduce a read out noise difference between reading the access information and the dummy information sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference. 27. The method of claim 9 , wherein the dummy information is written in other parts of the information carrier, including the first region, and the format of the dummy information is selected to reduce a read out noise difference between the access information and the dummy information sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference. 28. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the dummy information is written in other parts of the information carrier, including the first region, and the format of the dummy information is selected to reduce a read out noise difference between the access information and the dummy information sufficient to prevent easy detection of the noise difference.
