Method and apparatus for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion on each side of sheet after cutting even when there is variation in positions of cords embedded in the sheet, apparatus with imaging unit that images cross-sectional profile in width direction of sheet including protrusion portions, and generates waveform data from imaging of cross-sectional profile, detect maximum height-positions of crests and of troughs of waveform data, set, based on waveform data, a maximum height-position of crest closest to width end of sheet as maximum height-position of end crest, set a position corresponding to an edge of protrusion portion of sheet, located on more width end side than maximum height-position of end crest, as minimum height-position of a terminal trough, detect distance in width direction of sheet between maximum height-position of end crest and of the terminal trough, and measure protrusion length of protrusion portion based on detected distance.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion formed at least on one width end side of a long sheet having a plurality of parallelly arranged cords embedded therein, the method comprising: generating waveform data by imaging a cross-sectional profile in a width direction of the sheet including the protrusion portion by an imaging means; detecting maximum height positions of crests and minimum height positions of troughs of the waveform data; setting, based on the waveform data, a maximum height position of a crest closest to a width end of the sheet as a maximum height position of an end crest; setting a position corresponding to an edge of the protrusion portion of the sheet, which is located on more width end side than the maximum height position of the end crest, as a minimum height position of a terminal trough; detecting a distance in a width direction of the sheet between the maximum height position of the end crest and the minimum height position of the terminal trough; and measuring the protrusion length of the protrusion portion based on the detected distance. 2. The method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 1 , wherein the maximum height position of the end crest is identified as such when a distance in a height direction between the maximum height position of the end crest and the minimum height position of the terminal trough is greater than a distance in the height direction between a maximum height position of a crest and a minimum height position of a trough, the crest and the trough being located on more center side of the sheet than the maximum height position of the end crest. 3. The method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 1 , wherein the maximum height position of the end crest is identified as such when a distance in a height direction between the maximum height position of the end crest and the minimum height position of the terminal trough is greater than a predetermined value. 4. The method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 1 , wherein the maximum height position of the end crest is detected as such when a counted number of crests from a center side of the sheet toward the edge thereof has reached a predetermined value. 5. The method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 1 , wherein the maximum height position of the end crest is detected as such when the maximum height position of the end crest is at a predetermined distance in the width direction of the sheet from an optional position on a center side of the sheet. 6. The method for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 1 , wherein the maximum height position of the end crest is identified as such when a height of the end crest from a predefined level is determined to be greatest. 7. An apparatus for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion formed at least on one width end of a long sheet having a plurality of parallelly arranged cords embedded therein, the apparatus comprising: an imaging means that images a cross-sectional profile in a width direction of a surface of the sheet including the protrusion portion; and a control means that detects, from waveform data of the imaged cross-sectional profile of the sheet, a maximum height position of an end crest corresponding to a maximum height position of a crest located at a width end and a minimum height position of a terminal trough corresponding to an edge of the protrusion portion of the sheet, which is located on more width end side than the maximum height position of the end crest. 8. The apparatus for measuring a protrusion length of a protrusion portion according to claim 7 , further comprising a cutting means that cuts the protrusion portion according to the protrusion length of the protrusion portion.
