A thin ribbon spirally wound polymer conduit and method of forming, wherein a helical reinforcing bead is interposed adjacent overlapping layers of ribbon. Further, a method of continuously forming spirally wound conduit wherein a sacrificial layer, preferably having a different base polymer to that of the conduit, is first applied to the former before the conduit is formed overtop.

The invention claimed is: 1. A conduit suitable for use in a respiratory circuit, the conduit comprising: a connector configured to connect to the respiratory circuit; and a tube configured to engage the connector and comprising an inner lumen for transporting respiratory gases, the tube comprising a ribbon comprising a leading lateral edge and a trailing lateral edge, the ribbon arranged in spiral turns such that, at a first spiral turn, the leading lateral edge overlaps the trailing lateral edge adjacent a previous spiral turn, and the trailing lateral edge underlaps the leading lateral edge adjacent a succeeding spiral turn, an extent of the leading lateral edge over the trailing lateral edge defining an overlapping portion and an extent of the trailing lateral edge under the leading lateral edge defining an underlapping portion; and a helical bead interposed between the overlapping portion of the ribbon and the underlapping portion of the ribbon, the helical bead comprising a first portion, comprising a flat portion having a flat profile in cross-section, proximal the underlapping portion of the ribbon and comprising a first edge and a second edge, and a second portion, having a contour profile in cross-section, proximal the overlapping portion of the ribbon and extending between the first edge and the second edge of the first portion of the helical bead, wherein the overlapping portion of the ribbon conforms around and continuously contacts the full perimeter of the second portion of the helical bead and meets the underlapping portion of the ribbon at the second edge of the first portion of the helical bead. 2. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the leading lateral edge of the ribbon meets the underlapping portion of the ribbon at the first edge of the first portion of the helical bead. 3. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the ribbon comprises a breathable plastic material that, when the conduit is in use in the respiratory circuit, allows passage of water vapor from a respiratory gas flowing within the conduit. 4. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the bead encapsulates one or more heating wires. 5. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the ribbon comprises a plastic material. 6. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the bead comprises a plastic material. 7. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the ribbon is a laminate comprising a layer of plastic material and a layer of a reinforcing material. 8. The conduit of claim 7 , wherein the reinforcing material allows passage of water vapor from a respiratory gas flowing within the conduit. 9. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the extent of the overlapping portion of the ribbon conforming around the full perimeter of the second portion of the helical bead defines a conforming portion that is bonded to the helical bead along the conforming portion. 10. The conduit of claim 9 , wherein the ribbon comprises a breathable plastic material that, when the conduit is in use with the respiratory circuit, allows passage of water vapor from a respiratory gas flowing within the conduit. 11. The conduit of claim 10 , wherein the ribbon has a thickness less than about 50 microns. 12. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the flat portion of the first portion of the helical bead forms the entirety of the first portion of the helical bead. 13. The conduit of claim 1 , wherein the flat portion of the first portion of the helical bead is adjacent to the inner lumen.
