A colorless varnish for digital printing includes a colorless paste, which is made up of anon-polar carrier fluid and a resin swollen in the non-polar carrier fluid. The resin is present in the paste in an amount ranging from about 20% (w/w) to about 50% (w/w). A solid polar compound is dispersed in the resin. The solid polar compound is present in an amount up to 60 wt. % of solids in the colorless paste.

What is claimed is: 1. A colorless varnish for digital printing, comprising: a colorless paste, including: a non-polar carrier fluid; and a resin swollen in the non-polar carrier fluid, the resin present in the paste in an amount ranging from about 20% (w/w) to about 50% (w/w); and a solid polar compound dispersed in the resin, and present in an amount up to 60 wt. % of solids in the colorless paste, wherein the solid polar compound has a particle size ranging from about 30 nm to about 300 nm. 2. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 1 wherein the solid polar compound is an organic particle that is resistant to swelling or dissolving in the non-polar carrier fluid. 3. % of solids in the colorless paste, wherein the solid polar compound is selected from the group consisting of a saccharide, polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, styrene maleic anhydride, a bismaleimide oligomer, a cellulose derivative, and an aliphatic urethane acrylate. 4. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 3 wherein the saccharide is selected from the group consisting of maltose monohydrate, sucrose, sucrose octanoate, dextrin, xylitol, sucrose octaacetate, and sucrose benzoate. 5. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 3 wherein the solid polar compound has a particle size ranging from about 30 nm to about 300 nm. 6. A colorless varnish for digital printing, comprising: a colorless paste, including: a non-polar carrier fluid; and a resin swollen in the non-polar carrier fluid, the resin present in the paste in an amount ranging from about 20% (w/w) to about 50% (w/w); a solid polar compound dispersed in the resin, and present in an amount up to 60 wt. % of solids in the colorless paste; a charge adjuvant; and a charge director. 7. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 1 wherein the resin swollen in the non-polar carrier fluid is selected from the group consisting of ethylene methacrylic acid copolymers, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, and combinations thereof. 8. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 1 wherein: the non-polar carrier fluid is an isoparaffinic hydrocarbon; the resin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene methacrylic copolymers and ethylene acrylic copolymers; the colorless paste is present in an amount of about 58.5 wt. % of a total wt. % of the colorless varnish; the solid polar compound is maltose monohydrate and is present in an amount of about 40 wt. % of the total wt. % of the colorless varnish; and the colorless varnish further includes aluminum stearate in an amount of about 1.5 wt. % of the total wt. % of the colorless varnish. 9. The colorless varnish as defined in claim 1 wherein: the non-polar carrier fluid is an isoparaffinic hydrocarbon; the resin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene methacrylic copolymers and ethylene acrylic copolymers; the colorless paste is present in an amount of about 38.5 wt. % of a total wt. % of the colorless varnish; the solid polar compound is polyacrylic acid and is present in an amount of about 60 wt. % of the total wt. % of the colorless varnish; and the colorless varnish further includes aluminum stearate in an amount of about 1.5 wt. % of the total wt. % of the colorless varnish. 10. A method for using the colorless varnish as defined in claim 1 , the method comprising: diluting the colorless varnish with additional non-polar carrier fluid so that a total solids content of the colorless varnish ranges from about 1% (w/w) to about 5% (w/w); and applying the colorless varnish to form an overcoat layer on a liquid electrophotographic ink. 11. A method of making a colorless varnish, comprising: adding a solid polar compound to a colorless paste including a non-polar carrier fluid and a resin swollen in the non-polar carrier fluid, the resin present in the paste in an amount ranging from about 20% (w/w) to about 50% (w/w); and grinding the solid polar compound and the colorless paste to disperse the solid polar compound in the resin of the colorless paste, the solid polar compound being present in an amount up to 60 wt. % of solids in the colorless paste; wherein the solid polar compound is selected from the group consisting of a saccharide, polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, styrene maleic anhydride, a bismaleimide oligomer, a cellulose derivative, and an aliphatic urethane acrylate. 12. The method as defined in claim 11 , further comprising diluting the colorless varnish with additional non-polar carrier fluid so that the colorless varnish has from about 1% (w/w) to about 5% (w/w) of total solids. 13. The method as defined in claim 12 , further comprising: adding a charge adjuvant during the grinding; and adding a charge director after the grinding and the diluting. 14. The method as defined in claim 11 , further comprising pre-grinding the solid polar compound to reduce a particle size of the solid polar compound to be within a range of about 30 nm to about 300 nm. 15. The method as defined in claim 11 wherein the grinding is accomplished at a temperature ranging from about 25° C. to about 40° C. for a time ranging from about 12 hours to about 48 hours.
