Provided are a compound that generates an SHG signal but has suppressed generation of a TPF signal. Also provided is a cell examination method using the same. A compound for generating a second harmonic of light, the compound being an azobenzene derivative of formula (1), or a salt thereof. (R1 and R2 independently represent alkyl groups having 6-12 carbon atoms, and R3 to R18 independently represent substituents selected from hydrogen, halogens, alkyl groups, alkoxy groups, aryl groups, amino groups, hydroxyl groups, nitro groups, and cyano groups, but R5 and R6, R9 and R10, R13 and R14, and R17 and R18 may combine together and form a ring structure having 5-7 carbon atoms. X represents —N+R19R20R21, a sulfonyl group, a carboxyl group, or an —OR group. Here, R19, R20, and R21 independently represent straight-chain or branched alkyl groups having 1-5 carbon atoms, and —OR represents a monovalent polyalkylene oxide group terminated by an alkoxy group. a is 0 or 1, b is 0 or 1, and n is an integer of 1-10.)

The invention claimed is: 1. A compound for generating a second harmonic of light, the compound being an azobenzene derivative of the following formula (1), or a salt thereof: (wherein each of R 1 and R 2 independently represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, and each of R 3 to R 18 independently represents a substituent selected from hydrogen, halogen, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryl group, an amino group, a hydroxyl group, a nitro group and a cyano group, R 5 and R 6 , R 9 and R 10 , R 13 and R 14 , and R 17 and R 18 may combine together and form a ring structure having 5 to 7 carbon atoms, X represents —N + R 19 R 20 R 21 , a sulfonyl group, a carboxyl group, or an —OR group, here, each of R 19 , R 20 and R 21 independently represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and —OR represents a monovalent polyalkylene oxide group having an alkoxy group in the end, provided that a is 0 or 1, b is 0 or 1, and n is an integer from 1 to 10). 2. The compound for generating a second harmonic of light according to claim 1 , wherein X represents —N + R 19 R 20 R 21 and a=b=0 is satisfied in the formula (1). 3. A dye composition for generating a second harmonic of light comprising at least the compound according to claim 1 . 4. A cell examination method utilizing a second harmonic generated by a dye around a cell membrane, which comprises a dye introduction step of introducing the dye composition for generating a second harmonic of light according to claim 3 into a cell to be examined, and a second harmonic detection step of detecting a second harmonic released from the compound for generating a second harmonic of light introduced into the cell. 5. The cell examination method according to claim 4 , comprising a cell stimulation step of inducing a change in membrane electrical potential in the cell membrane of the cell after the dye introduction step and before the second harmonic detection step. 6. The cell examination method according to claim 5 , wherein a second harmonic is detected over time in the second harmonic detection step. 7. The cell examination method according to claim 4 , wherein the cell is a nerve cell.
