Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical device comprising an end effector is disclosed. The surgical device comprises a trigger actuatable to cause the end effector to be energized and a circuit in communication with the trigger. The circuit is configured to, when a first level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a first level, when a second level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a second level, and, delay by a first period of time between indicating a change in the force applied to the trigger from the first level of force to the second level of force and a change from driving the end effector at the first level to driving the end effector at the second level, wherein the first period of time is sufficient to give a user a warning about the change in the force.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical device comprising: an end effector comprising an ultrasonic blade to treat tissue; a transducer coupled to the end effector and configured to energize the end effector; a trigger actuatable to cause the end effector to be energized; and a circuit in communication with the trigger, wherein the circuit is configured to: determine that a first force is applied to the trigger; after determining that the first force is applied to the trigger, energize the end effector at a first level; determine that a second force is applied to the trigger, wherein the second force is greater than the first force; and after determining that the second force is applied to the trigger, energize the end effector at a second level, wherein, at the second level, a value for at least one characteristic selected from an amplitude of the end effector or a power delivered to the end effector is higher than a value for the at least one characteristic at the first level, wherein the circuit is configured to delay by a first period of time between indicating a change in the force applied to the trigger from the first force to the second force and a change from driving the end effector at the first level to driving the end effector at the second level, wherein the first period of time is sufficient to give a user a warning about the change in the force. 2. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the trigger is configured to be depressed further when the second force is applied than when the first force is applied. 3. The surgical device of claim 2 , wherein the trigger is configured to be depressed further towards a fully actuated position when the second force is applied than when the first force is applied. 4. The surgical device of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor positioned to sense force applied to the trigger, wherein determining that the first force is applied to the trigger comprises receiving a signal from the sensor. 5. A surgical device comprising: an end effector comprising an ultrasonic blade to treat tissue; a trigger actuatable to cause the end effector to be energized; and a circuit in communication with the trigger, wherein the circuit is configured to: when a first level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a first level; and when a second level of force is applied to the trigger, drive the end effector at a second level, wherein the circuit is configured to delay by a first period of time between indicating a change in the force applied to the trigger from the first level of force to the second level of force and a change from driving the end effector at the first level to driving the end effector at the second level, wherein the first period of time is sufficient to give a user a warning about the change in the force. 6. The surgical device of claim 5 , wherein a power delivered to the end effector at the second level is higher than a power delivered to the end effector at the first level. 7. The surgical device of claim 5 , wherein an amplitude of the end effector at the second level is higher than an amplitude of the end effector at the first level. 8. The surgical device of claim 5 , further comprising a feedback device in communication with the circuit, wherein the feedback device is configured to indicate at least one of a power provided to the end effector or an amplitude of the end effector. 9. The surgical device of claim 8 , further comprising a light source, wherein the light source indicates at least one of a power provided to the end effector or an amplitude of the end effector. 10. The surgical device of claim 8 , further comprising a speaker, wherein the circuit is further configured to cause the speaker to emit a plurality of sounds, wherein a frequency of the plurality of sounds indicates at least one of a power provided to the end effector or an amplitude of the end effector. 11. The surgical device of claim 5 , wherein the circuit is configured to prevent a power provided to the end effector from exceeding a threshold power level. 12. The surgical device of claim 5 , further comprising a transducer coupled to the end effector and configured to energize the end effector. 13. An ultrasonic surgical system for treating tissue, the system comprising: an ultrasonic transducer; an end effector comprising an ultrasonic blade coupled to the ultrasonic transducer; a switch having a first position and a second position; and a generator in communication with the switch and the ultrasonic transducer, wherein the generator is configured to: when a first level of force is applied to the switch, provide a first drive level to the ultrasonic transducer; and when a second level of force is applied to the switch, provide a second drive level to the ultrasonic transducer, wherein there is a delay by a first period of time between indicating a change in the force applied to the switch from the first level of force to the second level of force and a change from driving the end effector at the first drive level to driving the end effector at the second drive level, wherein the first period of time is sufficient to give a user a warning about the change in the force. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first drive level corresponds to a first power delivered to the end effector and the second drive level corresponds to a second power delivered to the end effector. 15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first drive level corresponds to a first amplitude of the end effector and the second drive level corresponds to a second amplitude of the end effector. 16. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a feedback device in communication with the generator, wherein the feedback device is configured to indicate the first drive level when the first level of force is applied to the switch. 17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a plurality of light sources configured to illuminate to indicate the first drive level when the first level of force is applied to the switch. 18. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a speaker configured to emit a plurality of sounds, wherein a frequency of the plurality of sounds indicates at least one of a power provided to the end effector and an amplitude of the end effector. 19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the generator is further configured to prevent a power provided to the end effector from exceeding a threshold power level. 20. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a handle, wherein the switch is positioned in the handle. 21. The system of claim 13 , wherein the switch is in the first position when the first level of force is applied to the switch. 22.
