The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said helmet includes: a shell, said shell containing said fan; and a support structure that holds said shell above the head of the individual wearing said helmet. 3. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said helmet includes: a chin bar that extends outwardly so that said chin bar extends around and forward of the face of the individual wearing said helmet; and at least one fastening feature attached to one of said hood or said chin bar that releasably holds said hood over said helmet, including said chin bar so that said face shield of said hood is located forward of said chin bar. 4. The personal protection system of claim 3 , wherein at least one control button for controlling operation of said personal protection system is mounted to said chin bar. 5. The personal protection system of claim 3 , wherein said microphone is mounted to said chin bar. 6. The personal protection system of claim 3 , wherein said chin bar and said hood are provided with complementary fastening features that, when engaged, hold said hood over said helmet so that said face shield of said hood is located forward of said chin bar. 7. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said hood is part of a toga. 8. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said helmet includes: a head band; and a shell, said shell being mounted to said head band so as to be located above the head of the wearer; and said fan is contained in said shell. 9. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said hood face shield is formed from flexible material; and said helmet and said hood are provided with plural complementary fastening features that are positioned so that, when said fastening features integral with said hood engage the complementary fastening features of said helmet, said face shield is disposed over the face of the individual wearing said personal protection and has a radius of curvature that varies along the length of the face shield such that, adjacent the chin of the individual the radius of curvature of the hood face shield is small and, spaced upwardly from said chin, the radius of curvature of the hood face shield is large. 10. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said first nozzle extends from said fan to direct air discharged from said fan in front of the face of the individual wearing said helmet; and a second said nozzle extends from said fan to direct air discharged from said fan towards the neck of the individual wearing said helmet wearer.
