Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A payment card (e.g., credit and/or debit card) is provided with a magnetic emulator operable of communicating information to a magnetic stripe reader. Information used in validating a financial transaction is encrypted based on time such that a validating server requires receipt of the appropriate encrypted information for a period of time to validate a transaction for that period of time. Such dynamic information may be communicated using such an emulator such that a card may be swiped through a magnetic stripe reader—yet communicate different information based on time. An emulator may receive information as well as communicate information to a variety of receivers (e.g., an RFID receiver).

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A payment card comprising: an electronic device operable to communicate information to a magnetic stripe reader; and a magnetic shielding covering at least an entire side of said electronic device during said communication. 2. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a battery. 3. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a processor. 4. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a display. 5. The payment card of claim 1 , wherein said magnetic shielding is in the shape of a rectangle. 6. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding. 7. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding are of different shapes. 8. The payment card of claim 1 , wherein said magnetic shielding is a magnetic material. 9. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said magnetic shielding is a magnetic material and said second magnetic shielding is a magnetic material. 10. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said second magnetic shielding includes a space in alignment with an active portion of said electronic device. 11. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said electronic device is disposed between said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding. 12. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said electronic device is disposed between said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding, said magnetic shielding operable to block said communicated information. 13. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnetic shielding, wherein said electronic device is disposed between said magnetic shielding and said second magnetic shielding, said second magnetic shielding operable to pass at least a portion of said communicated information. 14. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a button. 15. The payment card of claim 1 , further comprising a button, wherein said electronic device communicates said information based on a signal from said button. 16. The payment card of claim 1 , a wherein said magnetic shielding is operable to block a plurality of signals from a multi-function emulator.
