Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An analytical system is disclosed which recognizes different types of consumables with an identical footprint based on a unique surface geometry of each consumable. The analytical system includes stackers into which the consumables can be loaded either automatically or by the user. The stacker for one specific type of consumable recognizes the type of consumable based on its unique surface geometry.

What is claimed: 1. An analytical system comprising: an automated analyzer for processing and/or analyzing a nucleic acid analyte comprising a module for isolating and/or purifying the nucleic acid analyte; stackers for stacking multiple consumables of one type, wherein any one of said stackers comprises recognition elements for said consumable of one type, wherein any one of said recognition elements comprises a unique surface geometry complementary to a unique surface geometry of a specific type of consumable, and wherein each and every one of said stackers has an open top; three or more different types of consumables, each type of consumables being stacked in said stackers, wherein said consumables have essentially the same footprint and wherein any type of said consumables comprises said unique surface geometry on its side walls, wherein each of said consumables comprise two or more form locking elements; and a transport module comprising a handler with gripper fingers connected to a robotic arm and wherein said handler contacts individual consumables in an up-down direction from the open top of the stacked consumables of one type from the stacker and automatically transporting them to the module in which they are used, wherein said gripper fingers are configured to interlock with the two or more form locking elements; wherein said three or more different types of consumables comprise at least one pipette tip rack, at least one multiwell plate for preparing said nucleic acid analyte, and at least one multiwell plate for amplification or detection of said nucleic acid analyte. 2. The analytical system of claim 1 , wherein said surface geometry comprises recesses and/or ridges integrally formed in the surface of a consumable. 3. The analytical system of claim 1 , wherein said footprint comprises a length of 127.76 mm +/−0.25 mm and width of 85.48 mm +/−0.25 mm. 4. A method for loading a consumable within an analyzer, said method comprising: providing three or more different types of consumable, wherein said one of said more than one type of consumable comprises a unique surface geometry on its side walls and each of said consumables comprise two or more form locking elements; interacting any one of said three or more different types of consumable comprising said unique surface geometry with a stacker having an open top and stacking a plurality of any one of said more than one type of consumable, said stacker comprising recognition elements mounted inside of said stacker specific for said unique surface geometry for loading said consumable in said stacker; and retrieving individual consumables of one type from the open top of the stack of any one of said three or more different types of consumable from the stacker and automatically transporting said consumables to a module of the analyzer in which they are used with a transport module comprising a handler with gripper fingers connected to a robotic arm wherein said handler contacts individual consumables in an up-down direction and said retrieving step comprises interlocking said gripper fingers with the two or more form locking elements. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said unique surface geometry comprises recesses and/or ridges which are integrated in said surface. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said consumable comprises a length of 127.76 mm +/−0.25 mm and width of 85.48 mm +/−0.25 mm.
