The invention relates to compositions, methods of use, and methods of manufacture for an intercalated bleach compound and compositions thereof. The intercalated bleach compound has the formula M x (OCl) y (O) m (OH) n where M is an alkaline earth metal such as magnesium, calcium or mixture thereof. The values of x and y independently equal any number greater than or equal to 1 (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), and m and n independently equal any number greater than or equal to 0 (e.g., 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), but m and n are not both 0. In addition, the molar ratio of the alkaline earth metal (e.g., magnesium or calcium) to hypochlorite is at least 3:1. In other words, x is ≧3y. The compounds exhibit excellent stability, little or no chlorine bleach odor, exhibit excellent pH buffering characteristics, and less reactivity with organic materials as compared to alternative chlorine bleach products.

The invention claimed is: 1. A composition comprising: a bleach compound having the formula: M x (OCl) y (O) m (OH) n wherein M is selected from the group consisting of magnesium, calcium and mixtures thereof; wherein x and y independently equal any number greater than or equal to 1; wherein m and n independently equal any number greater than or equal to 0, but m and n are not both 0; and wherein x is ≧3y; and a fragrance. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein M is a magnesium. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein M is a calcium. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises at least two fragrances. 5. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more alkaline earth metal salts or alkali metal salts. 6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein alkali metal salts or alkaline earth metal salts are selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth oxides, alkaline earth hydroxides, alkaline earth carbonates, alkaline earth bicarbonates, alkaline earth chlorides, alkali chlorides, alkali carbonates, alkali bicarbonates, and combinations thereof. 7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein alkali or alkaline earth salts are selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium chloride trihydroxide, magnesium chloride pentahydroxide, magnesium carbonate, magnesium chloride, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and combinations thereof. 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein 2m+n≧5y. 9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein x=0.5y+m+0.5n. 10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein x, y, m, and n are integers. 11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the bleach compound has a range of available chlorine from about 3% to about 25%. 12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the bleach compound is a hydrate. 13. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of builders, surfactants, water soluble polymers, acids, fillers, diluents, desiccants, buffers, solid processing aids, preservatives, colorants, anti-corrosion inhibitors, dyes, hydrotropes, polymer dispersants, chelating agents, water-swellable polymers, disinfectants, antimicrobials, essential oils, enzymes, and combinations thereof. 14. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a solid. 15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the composition is in powder, granule, or tablet form.
