Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various methods and systems of making inorganic fiber/flake reinforced composites having a thermoplastic matrix are disclosed. The methods use systems similar to those used to make inorganic fiber/flake reinforced products having a thermoset matrix, but the systems and methods are modified to use thermoplastic precursor monomer(s) followed by in situ polymerization of the monomer(s) during and/or following forming of the desired shape of the products. These methods permit the manufacture of superior inorganic fiber reinforced thermoplastic matrix composites in large and very large shapes heretofore not possible, or practical.

The invention claimed is: 1. A composition comprising: a binder composition comprising monomers and/or oligomers of a polymer that are capable of polymerizing into the polymer under polymerization conditions; and particles in contact with the binder composition, wherein the particles include at least one polymerization compound selected from the group consisting of a polymerization initiator and a polymerization catalyst, wherein: the at least one polymerization compound is present only on surfaces of the particles, and the at least one polymerization compound is not present in the binder composition. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles comprise at least one of glass fibers or glass flakes. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises one or more layers of a fiber reinforcement product. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the binder composition is not polymerized. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is a thermoplastic polymer. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the binder composition comprises the monomers of the polymer. 7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles include the polymerization initiator. 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles include the polymerization catalyst. 9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of a filler, a pigment, and a colorant. 10. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the polymerization initiator comprises a silane moiety. 11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles comprises 50 wt. percent or more of the composition. 12. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the particles comprise 60 wt. percent or more of the composition. 13. A solid, interim polymer product composition comprising: a binder composition comprising monomers or oligomers of a polymer that are capable of polymerizing into the polymer under polymerization conditions; and glass fibers or glass flakes, wherein a polymerization activator is on surfaces of the glass fibers or flakes, wherein: the polymerization activator is present only on the surfaces of the glass fibers or flakes, and the polymerization activator is not present in the binder composition. 14. The solid, interim polymer product composition of claim 13 , wherein the binder composition is not polymerized. 15. The solid, interim polymer product composition of claim 13 , wherein the polymerization activator comprises a silane moiety. 16. The solid, interim polymer product composition of claim 13 , wherein the binder composition further comprises a polymerization catalyst. 17. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is a polyamide. 18. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the binder composition comprises the oligomers of the polymer.
