Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

White-balance is improved when printing on colored media, while minimizing the time and use of costly materials required by present approaches. In an embodiment, the typical solid white fill or background layer is altered by including in the white layer one or more of the other colors already available in the printer to shade this layer. Thus, a small amount of cyan, for example, helps balance a pink-ish (red) media; yellow is used for blue media; and magenta is used for green media; as well as combinations thereof. A combination of transparent process inks and opaque white helps to maintain brightness (luminosity).

The invention claimed is: 1. A printer system comprising: a processor; a printer mechanism configured to jet ink from an inkset onto a substrate having a particular color other than white, wherein the inkset includes a plurality of inks having white ink and an ink having a color other than white; and a mechanism for receiving a media identifier that uniquely identifies a media type and the particular color of the substrate; wherein the processor is configured to retrieve from a stored configuration file, based at least on the particular color of the media type identified by the media identifier, a first offset color value for a first offset color, wherein the first offset color value indicates an amount of the ink other than white; and wherein the printer mechanism is configured to print on the substrate of the identified media type in a first pass a first layer of ink, including the white ink mixed with the amount of ink other than white indicated by the first offset color value, and print an image on top of the printed first layer of ink. 2. The printer system of claim 1 , wherein the printed first layer of ink appears as a neutral color, so that the particular color of the substrate is not visible through the printed first layer of ink. 3. The printer system of claim 1 , wherein colors of the printed image are not modified based on the particular color of the substrate. 4. The printer system of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism for receiving the media identifier is configured to receive the media identifier from a user. 5. The printer system of claim 1 , further comprising: an optical measuring device that measures a region of color of the white layer printed on the substrate having the particular color other than white; wherein the processor is configured to determine, based on a measurement obtained from the optical measuring device, a measured color value for the region of color; determine an offset color value of an offset color, wherein the offset color value indicates an amount of the ink having the color other than white with which to mix with the white ink to mask the color of the substrate when printing the first layer on the substrate having the particular color other than white; and store the measured color value in the stored configuration file in association with the media type of the substrate. 6. The printer system of claim 1 , further comprising: a user interface for receiving from a user an indication of a substrate type on which to print the image; wherein the substrate type indicates the particular color of the substrate. 7. The printer system of claim 1 , further comprising: a user interface for receiving from a user a color value for each of at least one of a plurality of colors; the user interface comprising: an interactive element for each of a plurality of colors, the interactive element receiving from the user a color value corresponding to each of the colors; a trigger element for causing the printer mechanism to print a sample block color by mixing the white ink with specified amounts of colored inks indicated by each of the color values; and an input element that allows the user, responsive to visually inspecting the sample block color, to select one or more color values to store in a configuration entry in association with the substrate type and color. 8. The printer system of claim 7 , wherein the processor is configured to store, in association with a media identifier, the one or more color values received from the user. 9. The printer system of claim 1 , wherein the ink having a color other than white includes at least two inks having colors other than white, and wherein the first offset color value indicates an amount of each of the at least two inks having colors other than white. 10. The printer system of claim 1 , further comprising: a mechanism for adding an entry to the configuration file for the media type of the particular color; and a mechanism for printing a layer of the white ink on a test piece of substrate of the media type; wherein the printer system is further configured to determine that the layer of white appears as comprising a second color hue; measure the second color hue to determine a second color hue value; determine a third offset color value of a third offset color based on the second color hue value, wherein the third offset color value indicates an amount of each of the at least two inks having colors other than white to mix with the white ink; and store in the entry of the configuration file the third offset color value in association with the media type. 11. The printer system of claim 10 , further comprising for the measurement of the second color hue any of a spectrophotometer, a densitometer, and a camera. 12. The printer system of claim 10 , wherein the second color hue value comprises a red, green, and blue (RGB) value. 13. The printer system of claim 10 , wherein the determined third offset color value comprises a determined inverse of the second color hue value. 14. The printer system of claim 10 , wherein the third offset color value is stored in the configuration file entry as an RGB value. 15. The printer system of claim 10 , wherein the third offset color value is stored in the configuration file entry as a cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY) value. 16. The printer system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the amount of the ink having a color other than white to mix with the white ink to form a neutral layer, which comprises: looking up a second offset color value in a white balance profile based on the first offset color value, wherein the white balance profile was previously created for the type of ink being used by the printer mechanism; and determining the amount of the inks having a color other than white indicated by the second offset color value. 17. A printer system comprising: a processor; a printer mechanism configured to jet ink from an inkset onto a substrate having a particular color other than white, wherein the inkset includes a plurality of inks having white ink, cyan ink (C), magenta ink (M), and yellow ink (Y); and a mechanism for receiving a media identifier that uniquely identifies a media type and the particular color of the substrate; wherein the processor is configured to retrieve from a stored configuration file, based at least on the particular color of the media type identified by the media identifier, a first offset color value for a first offset color, wherein the first offset color value indicates an amount of each of the C, M and Y inks; and wherein the printer mechanism is configured to print on the substrate of the identified media type in a first pass a first layer of ink, including the white ink mixed with the amount of each of the C, M and Y inks indicated by the first offset color value, and print an image on top of the printed first layer of ink. 18. The printing system of claim 17 , wherein the white ink is opaque, and wherein the C, M and Y inks are transparent process inks. 19.
