Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one embodiment of the invention, a replaceable electrosurgical end effector cartridge is provided to couple to a mechanical wrist of a surgical instrument for a robotic surgical system. The replaceable electrosurgical end effector cartridge includes two end effectors, a fastener to rotatably couple the two end effectors together, and a cam mechanism. At least one of the two end effectors is a moveable end effector having a jaw portion, an off-center portion, and a base portion. The cam mechanism is coupled to the base portion of the at least one moveable end effector to pivot it about the fastener to open and close the jaw portion of the at least one moveable end effector with respect to the other.

What is claimed is: 1. An electro surgical end effector cartridge to couple to a mechanical wrist of a surgical instrument for a surgical system, the electro surgical end effector cartridge comprising: two end effectors rotatably coupled together, at least one of the two end effectors is a moveable end effector, the at least one moveable end effector having a jaw portion, an off-center portion, and a base portion; a fastener to rotatably couple the two end effectors together at the off-center portion of the at least one moveable end effector; and a cam mechanism including a drive pin within at least one straight cam slot, the cam mechanism coupled to the base portion of the at least one moveable end effector, wherein the drive pin is adapted to actuate in a linear motion within the at least one straight cam slot to pivot the at least one moveable end effector about the fastener to open and close the jaw portion of the at least one moveable end effector with respect to the other end effector, and wherein the cam mechanism further includes a link coupled to the base portion of the at least one moveable end effector by a link pin, a rod having a first end coupled to the link with the drive pin, and a driver accessory having one end coupled to a second end of the rod, the driver accessory having a drive cam slot to actuate the cam mechanism to pivot the at least one moveable end effector about the fastener in response to a force applied thereto. 2. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the fastener is a nut and a bolt coupled together. 3. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the fastener is a screw having male threads coupled into female threads of one of two end effectors. 4. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the fastener is a rivet. 5. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the jaw portion of the at least one moveable end effector is a blade, and the electrosurgical end effector cartridge is a replaceable scissors cartridge. 6. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the jaw portion of the at least one moveable end effector is a grip, and the electrosurgical end effector cartridge is a replaceable gripping cartridge. 7. The electrosurgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising: a spring latch with a catch to couple into a recess of a receptacle, the spring latch coupled to the two end effectors by the fastener. 8. The electrosurgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the two end effectors, the fastener, and the cam mechanism are formed out of a conductive material to couple an electrical current into tissue. 9. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the drive cam slot is configured to receive a dog of a driver. 10. An electro surgical end effector cartridge to couple to a mechanical wrist of a surgical instrument for a surgical system, the electro surgical end effector cartridge comprising: two moveable end effectors rotatably coupled together, each of the two moveable end effectors having a jaw portion, an off-center portion, and a base portion; a fastener rotatably coupling the two end effectors together at the off-center portion of each the two moveable end effectors; and a cam mechanism including a drive pin within a pair of straight cam slots, the cam mechanism coupled to the base portion of each of the two moveable end effectors, wherein the drive pin is adapted to actuate in a linear motion within the pair of straight cam slots to pivot the two moveable end effectors about the fastener to open and close the jaw portion of the two moveable end effectors, and wherein the cam mechanism further includes a link coupled to the base portion of each of the two moveable end effectors by a link pin; a rod having a first end coupled to the link with the drive pin; and a driver accessory having one end coupled to a second end of the rod, the driver accessory having a drive cam slot to actuate the cam mechanism to pivot the two moveable end effectors about the fastener in response to a force applied to the driver accessory. 11. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the fastener is a nut and a bolt coupled together. 12. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the fastener is a screw having male threads coupled into female threads of one of two moveable end effectors. 13. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the fastener is a rivet. 14. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the jaw portion of each of the two moveable end effectors is a blade, and the electrosurgical end effector cartridge is a replaceable scissors cartridge. 15. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the jaw portion of each of the two moveable end effectors is a grip, and the electrosurgical end effector cartridge is a replaceable gripping cartridge. 16. The electrosurgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , further comprising: a spring latch with a catch to couple into a recess of a receptacle, wherein the spring latch is coupled to the two moveable end effectors by the fastener. 17. The electro surgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the drive cam slot is configured to receive a dog of a driver. 18. The electrosurgical end effector cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the two end effectors, the fastener, and the cam mechanism are formed out of a conductive material to couple an electrical current into tissue.
