An air adsorbing and sound absorbing structure with a first portion comprising a first material comprising an open-celled foam with an air-adsorbing material coupled to the foam, where the first portion has a first air adsorption capacity and a first density. There is a second portion fixed to or integral with the first portion, wherein the second portion comprises one or more of: a different material than the first material, a second air adsorption capacity that is different than the first air adsorption capacity, and a second density that is different than the first density.

What is claimed is: 1. An air adsorbing and sound absorbing structure, comprising: a first portion comprising a first material comprising an open-celled skeletal foam scaffold and an air-adsorbing material coupled to the foam scaffold, where the first portion has a first air adsorption capacity and a first skeletal density; and a second portion integral with the first portion and also comprising the first material, wherein the second portion has a second air adsorption capacity, and a second skeletal density that is greater than the first skeletal density. 2. The structure of claim 1 wherein the foam comprises a skeletal, porous open-celled polymer foam scaffold having scaffold openings distributed within the volume of the scaffold, where the scaffold openings make up at least about 50% of the volume of the scaffold. 3. The structure of claim 1 wherein the foam comprises a polymer foam, or a melamine-based foam, or a polyurethane-based foam, or a metal foam, or a ceramic foam. 4. The structure of claim 1 wherein the air-adsorbing material comprises air-adsorbing material particles. 5. The structure of claim 4 wherein the air-adsorbing material particles are coupled to each other to form agglomerates, and the air-adsorbing material particles and agglomerates are coupled to the foam scaffold, using a binder material. 6. The structure of claim 4 wherein the air-adsorption capacity of the air-adsorbing structure is variable through its thickness. 7. The structure of claim 1 further comprising a non-porous material located on a surface of at least one of the first portion and the second portion. 8. The structure of claim 1 comprising a graded air adsorption capacity through its thickness or across its area. 9. The structure of claim 1 wherein the first portion has a different foam cell size than the second portion. 10. The structure of claim 1 wherein the skeletal density difference is created by compression molding. 11. The structure of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first portion and the second portion has a varied surface structure that is constructed and arranged to diffuse sound. 12. The structure of claim 1 wherein the air-adsorbing material comprises particles, particles are coupled to each other to form agglomerates, and the air-adsorbing material particles and agglomerates are coupled to the foam scaffold, wherein the structure has structure openings in the agglomerates and structure openings between agglomerates, where at least some such structure openings are open to the outside environment, and wherein the openings in the structure further comprise one or more channels in the structure that have diameters of greater than the apparent diameter of the structure openings between agglomerates. 13. The structure of claim 12 wherein the channels comprise one or more of through holes and blind holes that are open to the environment. 14. The structure of claim 12 wherein channels have different diameters. 15. The structure of claim 12 wherein channels have non-uniform diameters. 16. The structure of claim 12 wherein there are channels in both portions. 17. The structure of claim 12 wherein the structure has a varied thickness, and there is more channel area in thicker locations as compared to thinner locations. 18. The structure of claim 1 wherein the foam of at least one of the first portion and the second portion has a surface, and the air adsorbing material is coupled to the surface. 19. The structure of claim 1 further comprising a micro-perforated plate coupled to a surface of at least one of the first portion and the second portion. 20. An air adsorbing and sound absorbing structure, comprising: a first portion comprising a first material comprising an open-celled skeletal foam scaffold and an air-adsorbing material coupled to the foam scaffold, where the first portion has a first weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the first portion; and a second portion integral with the first portion and also comprising the first material, wherein the second portion has a second weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the second portion, where the second weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the second portion is different than the first weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the first portion. 21. The structure of claim 20 wherein the second weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the second portion is greater than the first weight of an air adsorption material per volume of the first portion. 22. The structure of claim 20 wherein the first and second portions each comprise an open-cell foam, and where the foams of the first and second portions have different hydrophilicities. 23. The structure of claim 22 wherein the first portion comprises a hydrophilic foam skeleton and the second portion comprises a more hydrophobic foam. 24. The structure of claim 20 wherein the second portion is located on an outside surface of the first portion or is distributed in the volume of the first portion.
