Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A wellbore perforating system and method with reliable and safer connections in a perforating gun assembly is disclosed. The system/method includes a gun string assembly (GSA) deployed in a wellbore with multiple perforating guns attached to plural switch subs. The perforating guns are pre-wired with a cable having multi conductors; the multi conductors are connected to electrical ring contacts on either end of the perforating guns. The switch subs are configured with electrical contacts that are attached to the electrical contacts of the perforating guns without the need for manual electrical connections and assembly in the field of operations. The system further includes detonating with a detonator that is positioned upstream of the perforating gun. The detonator is wired to a switch that is positioned downstream of the perforating gun.

What is claimed is: 1. A wired switch sub used in conjunction with a first perforating gun; said wired switch sub comprising a downstream end; said downstream end configured with a downstream adapter; said downstream adapter is configured with a plurality of downstream electrical contacts; wherein said plurality of downstream electrical contacts are each configured for direct operative electrical connection to corresponding electrical contacts in said first perforating gun. 2. The wired switch sub of claim 1 further comprises an upstream end; said upstream end configured with a upstream adapter; said upstream adapter is configured with a plurality of upstream electrical contacts; said plurality of upstream electrical contacts are each configured for operative connection to electrical contacts in a second perforating gun. 3. The wired switch sub of claim 2 wherein said switch is configured to be in operative electrical connection to said upstream adapter. 4. The wired switch sub of claim 2 wherein said upstream adapter and said downstream adapter are configured to connect to each other to form a cartridge. 5. The wired switch sub of claim 4 wherein said cartridge is loaded from one end of said wired switch sub. 6. The wired switch sub of claim 1 wherein: said downstream adapter is configured to accept a detonator; wherein said detonator is configured to be connected to a switch; and when perforating, said detonator is received in said downstream adapter, said detonator transfers a ballistic event to a detonating cord in said first perforating gun. 7. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch is configured to be in operative electrical connection to said downstream adapter. 8. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch is a pressure activated switch. 9. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch is an electronic switch. 10. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch is configured with a pre-determined electronic time delay. 11. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch is configured with a pre-determined ballistic time delay. 12. The wired switch sub of claim 6 wherein said switch sub is configured with ports; said ports configured for testing said switch sub. 13. A wired switch sub used in conjunction with a first perforating gun; said wired switch sub comprising a downstream end; said downstream end configured with a downstream adapter; said downstream adapter is configured with a plurality of downstream electrical contacts; said plurality of downstream electrical contacts are each configured for direct operative electrical connection to corresponding electrical contacts in said first perforating gun; wherein said switch sub is configured with ports; said ports configured for testing said switch sub; said downstream adapter is configured to accept a detonator; wherein said detonator is configured to be connected to a switch; and when perforating, said detonator is received in said downstream adapter, said detonator transfers a ballistic event to a detonating cord in said first perforating gun. 14. The wired switch sub of claim 13 further comprises an upstream end; said upstream end configured with a upstream adapter; said upstream adapter is configured with a plurality of upstream electrical contacts; said plurality of upstream electrical contacts are each configured for operative connection to electrical contacts in a second perforating gun. 15. The wired switch sub of claim 14 wherein said switch is configured to be in operative electrical connection to said upstream adapter. 16. The wired switch sub of claim 14 wherein said upstream adapter and said downstream adapter are configured to connect to each other to form a cartridge. 17. The wired switch sub of claim 13 wherein said switch is a pressure activated switch. 18. The wired switch sub of claim 13 wherein said switch is an electronic switch. 19. The wired switch sub of claim 13 wherein said switch is configured with a pre-determined electronic time delay. 20. The wired switch sub of claim 13 wherein said switch is configured with a pre-determined ballistic time delay.
