Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An evacuation navigation device disclosed. In one embodiment, the evacuation navigation device comprises a position determining component configured to determine a position of a handheld device within a selected environment having access to at least one positioning system. The device further comprises a display device configured to display the position of the handheld device on a digital map of the selected environment and at least one evacuation route from the position to an evacuation position. The device further comprises a wireless communication component configured to receive a real-time update of safety conditions along the at least one evacuation route. The device further comprises logic implemented by a processor for dynamically revising the digital map based upon the real-time update.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for emergency evacuation navigation comprising: a control system configured for real-time managing a digital map of a selected environment; a database configured to store said digital map of said selected environment and to download said digital map onto an emergency responder agent, wherein said database comprises a removable data storage device disposed in a secured box at a location proximate or within said selected environment, said removable data storage device containing a copy of said digital map of said selected environment, and wherein, in the instance of an emergency, said control system is configured to communicate said location of said secured box to said emergency responder agent and to remotely unlock said secured box; a positioning network available within said selected environment and configured to report a position of a handheld device within said digital map of said selected environment to said control system; and a wireless communication interface disposed within said selected environment and configured to facilitate communications between said emergency responder agent and said handheld device, wherein said removable storage device provides information to said emergency responder agent for accessing said wireless communication interface. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein said handheld device includes a position determining component having access to at least one positioning system, wherein said selected environment comprises a constructed environment and wherein said at least one positioning system is embedded within said constructed environment. 3. The system of claim 2 wherein said at least one positioning system comprises a Radio-frequency identification (RFID) network embedded within said constructed environment. 4. The system of claim 2 wherein said at least one positioning system comprises a Wi-Fi network embedded within said constructed environment. 5. The system of claim 2 wherein said at least one positioning system comprises a network in compliance with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1902.1 standards. 6. The system of claim 2 wherein said at least one positioning system comprises a network in compliance with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standards. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein a real-time update of safety conditions along at least one evacuation route is generated by said control system remotely from said handheld device and is received by said handheld device via said wireless communication network. 8. The system of claim 1 wherein said handheld device includes a wireless transceiver configured to permit wireless communication with said emergency responder agent. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein said handheld device is further configured to generate a notification, to said control system, when it has reached a defined safe area. 10. The system of claim 1 wherein said handheld device comprises a cellular telephone. 11. A method comprising: managing, by a control system, a digital map of a selected environment; storing, by a database, said digital map of said selected environment and downloading said digital map onto an emergency responder agent, wherein said database comprises a removable data storage device disposed in a secured box at a location proximate or within said selected environment, said removable data storage device containing a copy of said digital map of said selected environment; communicating, by said control system, in the instance of an emergency said location of said secured box to said emergency responder agent and remotely unlocking said secured box; reporting, by a positioning network available within said selected environment, a position of a handheld device within said digital map of said selected environment to said control system; facilitating communications, by a wireless communication interface disposed within said selected environment, between said emergency responder agent and said handheld device; and providing information, by said removable storage device, to said emergency responder agent for accessing said wireless communication interface. 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said selected environment comprises a constructed environment, said method further comprising: displaying said position of said handheld device on a digital map of said constructed environment and at least one evacuation route from said position to an evacuation position using a display device of said handheld device. 13. The method of claim 12 further comprising: determining a position of said handheld device wherein said positioning system is embedded within said constructed environment. 14. The method of claim 11 further comprising: storing said digital map of said selected environment in a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium resident within said handheld device. 15. The method of claim 11 further comprising: generating a real-time update of safety conditions along at least one evacuation route in response to a report from an environmental monitor embedded within said selected environment. 16. The method of claim 15 further comprising: generating said real-time update of safety conditions along said at least one evacuation route remotely from said handheld device; and conveying said real-time update of safety conditions along said at least one evacuation route to said handheld device via a wireless communication component of said handheld device. 17. The method of claim 15 further comprising: autonomously selecting by said handheld device a second evacuation route based upon said real-time update of safety conditions along said at least one evacuation route.
