Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An insulated icemaking compartment is provided in the fresh food compartment of a bottom mount refrigerator. The icemaking compartment may be integrally formed with the liner of the fresh food compartment, or alternatively, may be modular for installation anywhere in the fresh food compartment. A removable bin assembly with a front cover normally seals the icemaking compartment to maintain the temperature in the compartment. A cold air duct formed in the rear wall of the refrigerator supplies cold air from the freezer compartment to the icemaking compartment. A return air duct directs a portion of the air from the icemaking compartment back to the freezer compartment. An air vent in the icemaking compartment directs another portion of air into the fresh food compartment. A control system provides for controlling refrigerator functions in a manner that promotes energy efficiency.

What is claimed is: 1. A refrigerated appliance comprising: an insulated cabinet comprising a freezer compartment spaced in a bottom portion of the cabinet and a fresh food compartment spaced above the freezer compartment of the cabinet wherein the fresh food compartment is defined by a liner having top, bottom, left side, right side, front, and back walls, and a front opening in the front wall; an ice making compartment in an upper corner of an upper portion of the cabinet outside of the liner and including a front opening; a sleeve having a closed back end, an open front end corresponding with the front opening of the ice making compartment, perimeter dimension that allow the sleeve to fit within the ice making compartment; a removeable ice making assembly disposed within an interior volume of the sleeve and comprising an ice maker and an ice making compartment insulating front opening cover; insulating material between at least a portion of the liner proximate the ice making compartment and the sleeve; a cold air duct that has a lower air inlet positioned within the freezer compartment and an upper outlet end engaged with a fan and operably engaged with the ice making assembly to provide cold air to the ice making assembly; a fresh food compartment door providing access to both the fresh food compartment and the ice making compartment. 2. The refrigerated appliance of claim 1 , wherein the removeable ice making assembly further comprises an ice bin having a longitudinal axis between front and back ends and the ice making compartment insulating front opening cover is positioned on the front end. 3. The refrigerated appliance of claim 2 , further comprising a return air duct having an upper end connected to the ice making assembly and an outlet end positioned to return air to the freezer compartment. 4. The refrigerated appliance of claim 1 , further comprising a return air duct having an upper end connected to the ice making assembly and an outlet end positioned to return air to the freezer compartment. 5. The refrigerated appliance of claim 4 , wherein the return air duct is positioned within the back wall of the fresh food compartment between the cabinet and the liner and wherein the insulating material comprises insulating foam. 6. The refrigerated appliance of claim 3 , wherein the return air duct is positioned within the back wall of the fresh food compartment between the cabinet and the liner and wherein the insulating material comprises insulating foam. 7. The appliance of claim 6 , wherein the ice making compartment insulating front opening cover further comprises an inner panel, an outer panel, and insulating material between the inner panel and the outer panel. 8. The appliance of claim 1 , wherein the ice making compartment insulating front opening cover further comprises an inner panel, an outer panel, and insulating material between the inner panel and the outer panel. 9. The appliance of claim 2 , wherein the ice bin assembly is positioned within an internal space of the sleeve. 10. The appliance of claim 7 , wherein the sleeve comprises a plastic material having one or more: a. apertures; b. mounting bosses; c. mounting indents; d. built-in channel; and wherein the appliance further comprises thermal insulation between the sleeve and the ice making compartment. 11. The appliance of claim 1 further comprising an air duct hole within the sleeve; an air vent within the liner and aligned with the air duct hole wherein cold air is selectively released from the ice making compartment to the fresh food compartment through the air duct hole and air vent. 12. The appliance of claim 2 , wherein the ice making compartment insulating front opening cover is fixed to the front end of the ice bin and wherein the appliance further comprises an air duct hole within the sleeve; an air vent within the liner and aligned with the air duct hole wherein cold air is selectively released from the ice making compartment to the fresh food compartment through the air duct hole and air vent. 13. The appliance of claim 12 further comprising a latch on the ice making compartment insulating front cover which cooperates with finger-activating latching structure on the sleeve to latch the ice making assembly to a home position. 14. The appliance of claim 13 , wherein the ice making compartment insulating front cover includes an ice outlet adapted to pass ice in the ice bin from the bin to outside the ice making compartment. 15. The appliance of claim 14 , wherein the ice bin further comprises an elongated auger between a back end of the ice bin and the ice making compartment insulating front cover and wherein the ice bin assembly is slideable from a home position in a cavity and an extended position at least partially outside the cavity. 16. The appliance of claim 15 further comprising at least one rail on one of the ice making assembly and the sleeve to facilitate sliding action of the ice making assembly. 17. The appliance of claim 16 , wherein the ice bin comprises an ice holding space extending along the longitudinal axis and an open area above the ice holding space, and further comprising a bail member rotatable mounted at a first end and generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ice bin and a second free end moveable towards and away from the ice bin to sense level of ice in the ice bin, the bail member comprising a generally flat member including a plurality of apertures. 18. The appliance of claim 1 further comprising an ice chute in communication with the ice bin assembly and an ice dispenser. 19. A refrigerated appliance comprising: an insulated cabinet comprising a freezer compartment spaced in a bottom portion of the cabinet and a fresh food compartment spaced above the freezer compartment of the cabinet; a unitary liner substantially contoured to the cabinet and to a cavity in an upper corner of an upper portion of the cabinet where the liner has top, bottom, left side, right side, front, and back walls, and a front opening in the front wall; a dispenser disposed on a fresh food compartment door an ice making compartment in an upper corner of the upper portion of the cabinet outside of the liner and including a front opening; a removeable ice making assembly disposed within the cavity extending from the back wall of the unitary liner and configured to deliver ice to the dispenser and comprising an ice maker; insulating material between at least a portion of the liner proximate the ice making compartment and a sleeve; a cold air duct that has a lower air inlet positioned within the freezer compartment and an upper outlet end engaged with a fan and operably engaged with the ice making assembly to provide cold air to the ice making assembly; a fresh food compartment door providing access to both the fresh food compartment and the ice making compartment. 20.
