Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus includes rails for supporting sides of a circumferential peripheral edge of a carrier. A movable ram engages a rearward portion of the carrier. A movable restrainer restrains movement of the ram. A wheel engages a forward portion of the carrier. A controller is operable to control the movable restrainer to restrain movement of the ram with the carrier and at least one metal object disposed adjacent an induction heating device, the wheel to rotate the carrier and the metal object, the induction heating device to induction heat the rotating metal object, and the movable restrainer to disengage the ram so that the wheel pivots away to allow passage of the carrier and the heated metal object into a quench bath. A plurality of metal objects may be arranged in a circular array in the carrier about a diameter generally equal to the diameter of an induction coil.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device for use in induction heating at least one metal object, said device comprising: a holder for holding the at least one metal object, said holder comprising means for attaching the at least one metal object to said holder; wherein said holder and the attached at least one metal object are simultaneously rotatable through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least a surface of the at least one metal object; wherein said holder comprising the means for attaching and the attached generally uniformly heated at least one metal object are movable into a quench bath; and wherein said holder comprises stainless steel. 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprising said means for attaching comprises means for attaching the at least one metal object having an aperture therein. 3. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprising said means for attaching comprises means for attaching the at least one metal object having a ring-shaped configuration. 4. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprises a disc-shaped member. 5. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprising said means for attaching comprises means for attaching a plurality of metal objects. 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said holder comprising said means for attaching comprises means for attaching the plurality of metal objects arranged in a circular pattern. 7. The device of claim 5 wherein said holder comprises a plurality of cutouts for holding the plurality of metal objects. 8. The device of claim 5 wherein said holder comprises a disc-shaped member and a support for holding the plurality of metal objects arranged in a circular pattern. 9. The device of claim 8 wherein said support comprise a plurality of cutouts arranged in a circular pattern. 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprises a disc-shaped member. 11. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprises a disc-shaped member having a peripheral edge portion having a peripheral edge. 12. The device of claim 1 wherein said holder comprising a retaining plate. 13. The device of claim 12 further comprising a bolt extendable through a hole in said retaining plate. 14. A device for use in induction heating at least one metal object, said device comprising: a holder for holding the at least one metal object, said holder comprising means for attaching the at least one metal object to said holder; wherein said holder and the attached at least one metal object are simultaneously rotatable through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least a surface of the at least one metal object; and wherein said holder comprising the means for attaching and the attached generally uniformly heated at least one metal object are movable into a quench bath; and an apparatus operable to simultaneously rotate the holder and the at least one metal object through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least the surface of the at least one metal object; and said apparatus is operable to simultaneously move the at least one heated metal object into a quench bath. 15. The device of claim 14 wherein said apparatus is operable to eject under a force the at least one heated metal object into the quench bath. 16. The device of claim 15 wherein said apparatus is operable to eject under the force the holder and the at least one heated metal object into the quench bath at a rate faster than the holder and the at least one heated metal object falling under the force of gravity. 17. The device of claim 14 wherein said apparatus is operable to restrain under a force the holder and the at least one heated metal object in the induction field, and operable to release the restrained holder and at least one heated metal object so that the force moves the holder and at least one heated metal object into the quench bath. 18. The device of claim 14 wherein said apparatus is operable to simultaneously rotate the holder and the at least one metal object in a circle through the induction field to generally uniformly heat at least the surface of the at least one metal object. 19. The device of claim 18 wherein said apparatus comprises an induction coil having a diameter, and the holder being operable to hold the at least one metal object arranged in the circular array about a diameter generally equal to a diameter of an induction coil. 20. A device for use in induction heating at least one metal object, said device comprising: a holder for holding the at least one metal object, said holder comprising means for attaching the at least one metal object to said holder; wherein said holder and the attached at least one metal object are simultaneously rotatable through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least a surface of the at least one metal object; and wherein said holder comprising the means for attaching and the attached generally uniformly heated at least one metal object are movable into a quench bath; and an apparatus operable to simultaneously rotate the holder and the at least one metal object through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least the surface of the at least one metal object; and wherein said apparatus operable to guide the holder and the at least one metal object past an induction coil. 21. A device for use in induction heating at least one metal object, said device comprising: a holder for holding the at least one metal object; an apparatus operable to simultaneously rotate the holder and the at least one metal object through an induction field to generally uniformly heat at least a surface of the at least one metal object; and wherein said apparatus is operable to eject under a force the holder and the at least one heated metal object into the quench bath at a rate faster than the holder and the at least one heated metal object falling under the force of gravity. 22. The device of claim 21 wherein said apparatus is operable to restrain under a force the holder and the at least one heated metal object in the induction field, and operable to release the restrained holder and at least one heated metal object so that the force moves the holder and at least one heated metal object into the quench bath. 23. The device of claim 21 wherein said apparatus is operable to simultaneously rotate the holder and the at least one metal object in a circle through the induction field to generally uniformly heat at least the surface of the at least one metal object. 24.
