We claim: 1. An isolated polypeptide comprising a mutated feline leukemia virus (FeLV) envelope (ENV) polypeptide, wherein the mutated FeLV ENV protein has at least 93% sequence identity to SDQ ID NO:2, 4, or 6, and wherein the mutation is a substitution of arginine (R), aspartic acid (D), or methionine (M) at the amino acid position 527 of SEQ ID NO:2, 4, or 6. 2. A composition comprising the polypeptide of claim 1 , and a pharmaceutically or veterinarily acceptable vehicle, diluent or excipient. 3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the composition is capable of eliciting an immune response in a host. 4. The isolated polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the substitution is arginine (R) for glutamic acid (E). 5. The isolated polypeptide of claim 4 , wherein the mutated FeLV ENV polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:2 or 4.
