A modular IOL system including intraocular primary and secondary components, which, when combined, form an intraocular optical correction device, wherein the secondary component is placed on the primary component within the perimeter of the capsulorhexis, thus avoiding the need to touch or otherwise manipulate the capsular bag. The secondary component may be manipulated, removed, and/or exchanged for a different secondary component for correction or modification of the optical result, on an intra-operative or post-operative basis, without the need to remove the primary component and without the need to manipulate the capsular bag. The primary component may have haptics extending therefrom for centration in the capsular bag, and the secondary component may exclude haptics, relying instead on attachment to the primary component for stability. Such attachment may include actuatable interlocking members.

We claim: 1. A method of extracting an intraocular lens (IOL), comprising: a. inserting an extraction device into an eye, the extraction device comprising: a handle, a shaft extending distally from the handle, a holder having an IOL engaging element, the holder extending distally from a distal portion of the shaft, a tongue extending distally from the distal portion of the shaft and distally beyond the IOL engaging element to protect eye anatomy, and a cutter having a blade, wherein the blade is selectively retractable and extendable from the distal portion of the shaft; b. positioning the tongue on one side of the IOL; c. positioning the holder on another side of the IOL; d. holding the IOL between the tongue and the holder; e. cutting the IOL with the cutter by relative movement between the blade and the IOL; and f. removing at least a portion of the cut IOL from the eye. 2. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein the blade of the cutter is retracted in the distal portion of the shaft when the extraction device is inserted into the eye. 3. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 2 , further including extending the blade of the cutter from the distal portion of the shaft for cutting the IOL. 4. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein the shaft is hollow, and wherein the method includes positioning a cut portion of the IOL in the shaft. 5. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein the cutter includes two blades, the blades being spaced-apart from each other, and wherein cutting the IOL includes forming two cut lines in the IOL using the two blades. 6. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein holding the IOL between the tongue and the holder includes positioning the holder on an anterior side of the IOL and positioning the tongue on a posterior side of the IOL. 7. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein holding the IOL between the tongue and the holder includes engaging a distal edge portion of the IOL with the IOL engaging element of the holder. 8. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein holding the IOL between the tongue and the holder includes engaging a proximal edge portion of the IOL with the IOL engaging element of the holder. 9. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 1 , wherein cutting the IOL with the cutter includes only partially cutting through the IOL with the cutter, and removing at least a portion of the cut IOL from the eye includes drawing the partially cut IOL into the distal portion of the shaft. 10. A method of extracting an intraocular lens (IOL), comprising: engaging the IOL with an extraction device, wherein engaging the IOL includes holding the IOL with a holder of the extraction device, the holder extending out of an opening in an end of the extraction device, and wherein the end of the extraction device includes a first portion at a first side of the opening and a second portion at a second side of the opening, the first side and the second side being spaced-apart and on diametrically opposite sides of the opening; and manipulating the IOL with the extraction device, wherein manipulating the IOL includes causing relative movement between the IOL and the end of the extraction device, thereby forcing the IOL against the first portion and the second portion of the end of the extraction device to move a first part of the IOL into a position in which an overlap develops between the first part and a second part of the IOL. 11. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 10 , further including removing the IOL from an eye with the first part overlapping the second part. 12. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 11 , wherein removing the IOL from the eye includes retracting the first part and the second part into the end of the extraction device, the first part overlapping the second part in the end of the extraction device. 13. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 10 , wherein the overlap is along an axis extending in an anterior-posterior direction with respect to the IOL. 14. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 10 , wherein forcing the IOL against the first portion and the second portion of the end of the extraction device includes forcing the IOL against one or more blades at one or more of the first portion and the second portion to form one or more cuts in the IOL between the first part and the second part. 15. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 10 , wherein forcing the IOL against the first portion and the second portion of the end of the extraction device includes forcing the IOL against a pair of spaced-apart blades, wherein a first blade of the pair of spaced-apart blades includes the first portion and a second blade of the pair of spaced-apart blades includes the second portion, to form a pair of spaced-apart cuts in the IOL between the first part and the second part. 16. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 15 , wherein a third part of the IOL lies between the pair of spaced-apart cuts, and the method further includes removing the IOL from an eye by retracting the third part into the end of the extraction device before flipping over the first part and the second part and retracting the first part and the second part into the end of the extraction device. 17. A method of extracting an intraocular lens (IOL), comprising: engaging the IOL with an extraction device, wherein engaging the IOL includes holding the IOL with a holder of the extraction device, the holder extending out of an opening in an end of the extraction device, the end of the extraction device including edge portions surrounding the opening, the edge portions including spaced-apart edge portions on opposite sides of the opening; and manipulating the IOL with the extraction device, wherein manipulating the IOL includes causing relative movement between the IOL and the end of the extraction device, thereby forcing the IOL against at least diametrically opposite points of the spaced-apart edge portions to move the IOL into the opening, and to move a first part of the IOL toward a second part of the IOL, the first part being diametrically opposite the second part. 18. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 17 , wherein movement of the first part toward the second part causes at least a portion of the first part to overlap at least a portion of the second part, such that an anterior-facing surface of one of the first part and the second part faces a posterior-facing surface of the other of the first part and the second part. 19. A method of extracting an IOL as in claim 17 , wherein forcing the IOL against the diametrically opposite points of the spaced-apart edge portions at the end of the extraction device includes forcing the IOL against at least one blade at the end to cut the IOL, the at least one blade extending distally from a side of the opening. 20.
