The present disclosure provides an improved collapsible medical closure device fabricated from a tubular wire mesh material. The collapsible medical closure device has an expanded preset configuration and an elongated collapsed reduced diameter configuration for delivery through a delivery catheter or other delivery means to a desired treatment site. The collapsible medical closure device is shaped to create short-term and long-term occlusion of an opening, such as an opening in the wall of the heart, and includes a disc shaped portion on a distal end, a cone shaped portion on a proximal end, a middle portion connecting the disc shaped portion and the cone shaped portion, and a means for attaching a delivery cable located in the middle portion. The collapsible medical closure device additionally includes a therapeutic membrane for aiding in occlusion and promoting tissue growth, as well as one or more radiopaque marker bands.

What is claimed is: 1. A collapsible medical closure device for occluding an opening in a body, the collapsible medical closure device comprising: a proximal end and a distal end, a longitudinal axis extending between the proximal end and the distal end; a disc shaped portion on the distal end; a cone shaped portion having a first length along the longitudinal axis on the proximal end; a middle portion connecting the disc shaped portion and the cone shaped portion and having a second length along the longitudinal axis less than the first length, wherein the disc shaped portion, the cone shaped portion, and the middle portion comprise a metal fabric; a therapeutic membrane contacting at least a portion of the metal fabric; and a single means for attaching a delivery device to the collapsible medical closure device located in the middle portion. 2. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the means for attaching a delivery device is a threadable member. 3. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the means for attaching a delivery device is a center end screw. 4. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic membrane is sewn onto at least a portion of the metal fabric. 5. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic membrane contacts the disc shaped portion, the cone shaped portion, and the middle portion. 6. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic membrane comprises a proximal end therapeutic membrane and a distal end therapeutic membrane. 7. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic membrane is a biodegradable polymer. 8. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 7 wherein the biodegradable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyester fabric, polyester fabric coated in elastin, polyester fabric coated in collagen, collagen sponge, collagen scaffolds made from a mixture of hydrogel and collagen, and combinations thereof. 9. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the metal fabric comprises a metal alloy selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, nickel-titanium, and cobalt-chromium-nickel. 10. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 wherein the metal fabric is formed by strands having a diameter in a range of about 0.05 millimeters to about 0.127 millimeters and comprises a plurality of strands in a range of about 36 to about 144. 11. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 1 further comprising at least one radiopaque marker band. 12. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 11 wherein the at least one radiopaque marker band includes a first radiopaque marker band on the disc shaped portion. 13. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 12 wherein the at least one radiopaque marker band further includes a second radiopaque marker band located in the middle portion. 14. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 13 wherein the second radiopaque marker band surrounds the means for attaching a delivery device. 15. A collapsible medical closure device comprising: a metal fabric comprising woven metal strands having an expanded preset configuration shaped to create an occlusion of an opening in a body, wherein the woven metal strands have a memory property whereby the collapsible medical closure device tends to return to said expanded preset configuration when unconstrained, wherein the expanded preset configuration comprises: a proximal end and a distal end, a longitudinal axis extending between the proximal end and the distal end; a disc shaped portion having a first diameter and a first length on distal end, the first length taken along the longitudinal axis; a cone shaped portion having a second diameter and a second length on a proximal end, the second length taken along the longitudinal axis; and a middle portion connecting the disc shaped portion and the cone shaped portion and having a third length taken along the longitudinal axis less than the second length, wherein the middle portion contains a single means for attaching a delivery device; and a therapeutic membrane contacting at least a portion of the metal fabric, wherein the collapsible medical closure device is deformable through a channel in a patient's body. 16. The collapsible medical closure device of claim 15 wherein the means for attaching a delivery device is a threadable member.
