A method of modifying the content of certain bacteria in uncured tobacco material is provided, the method including contacting an uncured tobacco material with a treatment solution, wherein the treatment solution is selected from the group consisting of: (i) a solution comprising salt, sugar, or a combination thereof; (ii) a solution comprising one or more enzymes; and (iii) a solution comprising one or more probiotics, wherein said contacting provides a treated tobacco material having a reduced total bacterial content following harvest. In certain embodiments, the treated tobacco material is subsequently cured, and can optionally be fermented. Smoking articles and smokeless tobacco products including such treated tobacco materials are also provided.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of treating a tobacco material, comprising contacting an unharvested tobacco material with a salt selected from the group consisting of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and combinations thereof, and harvesting and curing the tobacco material after said contacting, wherein the unharvested tobacco material is contacted with an amount of said salt such that the total tobacco-specific nitrosamine (TSNA) content of the tobacco material following harvest and curing is at least 20% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been contacted with a salt prior to harvest. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contacting comprises applying the salt to soil and planting the unharvested tobacco material in the form of a tobacco seed, a tobacco seedling, an immature live plant, or a mature live plant in the salt-treated soil. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contacting comprises applying the salt to soil in which the unharvested tobacco material is growing. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contacting comprises applying the salt to growing plants of the unharvested tobacco material. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt is in dry form. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt is in the form of an aqueous solution. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unharvested tobacco material is dark-air cured tobacco. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unharvested tobacco material is selected from the group consisting of Pasado tobacco, Cubano tobacco, Jatim tobacco, Bezuki tobacco, and combinations thereof. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the total TSNA content following harvest and curing is at least a 40% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been contacted with a salt prior to harvest. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the total TSNA content following harvest and curing is at least 80% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been contacted with a salt prior to harvest. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reduced TSNA content is a reduced content of one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), 4-methyl-N-nitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT), 4-methyl-N-nitrosamine-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL), and N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB). 12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising curing the treated tobacco material to give a treated, cured tobacco material. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the curing comprises dark air curing. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the curing comprises fire curing or flue curing. 15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: processing the treated, cured tobacco material to provide a processed tobacco material in a form suitable for incorporation in a tobacco product; and incorporating the processed tobacco material into a smokeless tobacco product. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the processed tobacco material is in shredded or particulate form. 17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the smokeless tobacco product is a snus product comprising an outer pouch containing the processed tobacco material. 18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the smokeless tobacco product further comprises one or more additives selected from the group consisting of salts, sweeteners, fillers, binders, pH adjusters or buffering agents, colorants, humectants, oral care additives, preservatives, syrups, disintegration aids, flavorants, and antioxidants. 19. A method of treating a tobacco material, comprising applying a salt to a soil to provide a salt-treated soil; growing a tobacco material in said salt-treated soil; harvesting said tobacco material; and curing the harvested tobacco material to give a treated, cured tobacco material, wherein the salt is applied to the soil in an amount such that the total tobacco-specific nitrosamine (TSNA) content of the tobacco material following harvest and curing is at least 20% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been grown in salt-treated soil. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the growing comprises applying a salt to the soil to give a salt-treated soil and planting the tobacco material in the salt-treated soil. 21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the growing comprises applying a salt to soil in which the tobacco material is growing. 22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the salt is in dry form. 23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the salt is in the form of an aqueous solution. 24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the salt is in dry form. 25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the salt is in the form of an aqueous solution. 26. The method of claim 19 , wherein the salt is a chloride salt. 27. The method of claim 19 , wherein the salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and combinations thereof. 28. The method of claim 19 , wherein the tobacco material is dark-air cured tobacco. 29. The method of claim 19 , wherein the tobacco material is selected from the group consisting of Pasado tobacco, Cubano tobacco, Jatim tobacco, Bezuki tobacco, and combinations thereof. 30. The method of claim 19 , wherein the total TSNA content of the tobacco material following harvest and curing is at least 40% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been grown in salt-treated soil. 31. The method of claim 19 , wherein the total TSNA content of the tobacco material following harvest and curing is at least 80% decreased by weight as compared with the TSNA content of a harvested and cured tobacco material that has not been grown in salt-treated soil. 32. The method of claim 19 , wherein the reduced TSNA content is a reduced content of one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), 4-methyl-N-nitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT), 4-methyl-N-nitrosamine-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL), and N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB). 33. The method of claim 19 , wherein the curing comprises dark air curing. 34. The method of claim 19 , wherein the curing comprises fire curing or flue curing. 35. The method of claim 19 , further comprising: processing the treated, cured tobacco material to provide a processed tobacco material in a form suitable for incorporation in a tobacco product; and incorporating the processed tobacco material into a smokeless tobacco product. 36. The method of claim 35 , wherein the processed tobacco material is in shredded or particulate form. 37.
