Official abstract text for this publication.
A composite article includes a substrate and a protective coating on at least a portion of the substrate. The protective coating includes reinforcement particles dispersed within an elastomeric matrix that is modified with a silicon-containing modifier selected from polysilsesquioxane, polyhedral oligomeric silicate, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), and combinations thereof. The reinforcement particles are selected from carbon, nickel metal, and combinations thereof. The protective coating is multi-layered and includes a distinct first layer and a distinct second layer that is contiguous with the distinct first layer such that each of the distinct first layer and the distinct second layer have an exposed outer surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A composite article comprising: a substrate; and a protective coating on at least a portion of the substrate, the protective coating comprising reinforcement particles dispersed within an elastomeric matrix that is modified with a silicon-containing modifier selected from the group consisting of polysilsesquioxane, polyhedral oligomeric silicate, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), and combinations thereof, the reinforcement particles being selected from the group consisting of carbon, nickel metal, and combinations thereof, and the protective coating being multi-layered and including a distinct first layer and a distinct second layer contiguous with the distinct first layer such that each of the distinct first layer and the distinct second layer have an exposed outer surface. 2. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement particles are the carbon. 3. The composite article as recited in claim 2 , wherein the carbon includes carbon nanotubes. 4. The composite article as recited in claim 2 , wherein the carbon includes carbon black. 5. The composite article as recited in claim 2 , wherein the carbon includes carbon nanofibers. 6. The composite article as recited in claim 2 , wherein the carbon includes graphene. 7. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement particles are the nickel metal. 8. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the protective coating includes, by weight, up to 75% of the reinforcement particles. 9. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the protective coating includes, by weight, 1-50% of the reinforcement particles. 10. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the protective coating includes, by weight, 1-15% of the reinforcement particles. 11. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric matrix is selected from a group consisting of polyurethane, fluoropolymer, polyurea, polysiloxane, natural rubber, polyolefin, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, and combinations thereof. 12. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric matrix is silicone. 13. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the distinct first layer has a first composition configured for anti-icing and the distinct second layer has a second, different composition configured for electrical conductivity. 14. The composite article as recited in claim 1 , wherein the distinct first layer and the distinct second layer have different electrical conductivity. 15. A composite article comprising: an airfoil having a body that extends between leading and trailing edges; and a protective coating disposed on the airfoil, the protective coating comprising reinforcement particles dispersed within a silicone matrix that is modified with a silicon-containing modifier selected from the group consisting of polysilsesquioxane, polyhedral oligomeric silicate, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), and combinations thereof, the protective coating being multi-layered and including a discrete first layer and a discrete second layer adjacent the discrete first layer such that both the discrete first layer and the discrete second layer have an exposed outer surface, and one, but not the other, of the discrete first layer and the discrete second layer is electrically conductive. 16. The composite article as recited in claim 15 , wherein the reinforcement particles of the one of the discrete first layer and the discrete second layer that is electrically conductive are selected from the group consisting of carbon, metal, and combinations thereof. 17. The composite article as recited in claim 16 , wherein the reinforcement particles of the other of the discrete first layer and the discrete second layer are elastomeric. 18. The composite article as recited in claim 16 , wherein the reinforcement particles of the other of the discrete first layer and the discrete second layer are silicone microspheres.
